    Windbreaker DIY

    Hi,

I am going to be making a mesh type wind breaker and have been trying to source materal, the link shows material for a MX5, I have emailed the seller and he can supply apeice cut to Stag size for £16.51.

My question is, has any one used this supplier before and what is the quality of the material.

    Hi Dan,

if you follow this link i bought one from flea bay, cheap, you can buy them new from Germany and they work out at about 100 all in, it works fantasticly and i have not had to modify the fitting at all, IE, not drilled into the stag etc

    regards

My wife bought mine from Breeze Breaker. I like it and dead easy to fit. But to be perfectly honest I think she paid about 175 quid, which is quite a lot for what it actually is. Best of luck Danny hope you get one fabbed up. Hopefully will see it some time next month

          Dave,

I reckon 46" x 15" should do. What do you think?

          Alan,

Thanks for the info, looks interesting.

            Hi Danny
I too am interested in making a windbreaker. I made my own acrylic screen a couple of years back but fancy mesh now.
What ideas have you got for forming the top profile that will fasten to the T-Bar and holding the top of the screen. I was thinking about some easily formable alloy but not sure about the profile yet.
            Regards

              Dave,

I was thinking in using Micro-bore central heating pipe to form the shape and make a sleeve of vinyl attached to the perimeter of the mesh, the micro bore will go inside the sleeve. I will attach the bottom of the screen with press studs to the rear seat tonneau cover front securing bar, the top will be secured using velcro. But if you have some other ideas!!!!!

                HI Danny
Good idea. Microbore is easy to form. Once you are satisfied the shape is correct and symmetrical you could possibly fill the piping with resin. This would stop it losing it's shape and getting squashed in the future

why not use aluminum pipe it will hold its shape better than micro bore copper, the vinyl sleeve is a good idea how are you going to fix the vinyl sleeve to the mesh (you could use two pieces of flat aluminum sandwiched between the vinyl and mesh and pop-riveted together

                    Danny.
I was also thinking on the same lines but use normal 15mm copper water pipe as its reasonably easy to bend to shape using either springs or pipe bender to put the "curves" on either end to match the T bar. Either that or use black plastic electrical conduit again can be bent using springs. Agree in using Vinyl leather cloth to go over the pipe and then sandwich the mesh/screen material in between, I have an industrial sewing machine so will probably stitch it together. Hold the top bar in place on the T bar with Velcro cable ties and as for the bottom I thought of some form of bungee / shock cord to keep the tension on and attach this to the seat belt mounts. I have managed to get hold of some fibreglass mesh used for insect screens (ebay 270745083495). what was proving difficult was finding some nice black plastic bungs to go in the end of the pipe to finish of. I want to try and make it so that it can be put in the boot out of the way if I need to. Was going to have a go at this today but the weather has not been good every time I put my head out of doors its rained!.

                    Paul.

                      Dave,

I intend to sew the vinyl sleeve to the mesh (sandwich the mesh) using an old sewing machine I have. I havs been used before for sewing vinyl, I made my rear seat tonneau cover

To the guys who are making their own windbreak,
I've just posted some pics of mine I made a year ago in the testing threads section. It might give you some idea of what your trying to achieve.

Is the mesh that you have bought good enough and up to the job? I t sure sounds like it is and a good price as well.

                              Danny.
The mesh is very strong being based on fibreglass and not nylon or similar, my only concern is the size of the mesh holes however at least you can see through it!
If you want a sample then PM me and I will send a piece up.
