    Axle Stands at Rear

Quick question before I go ahead.

I've got the car up on a pair of high hydraulic operated ramps at the rear and now want to remove the wheels. The only place available to support the car on axle stands is on that bit of the rear sub frame to which the trailing arms are attached. Is it OK to do that?

I have the full workshop manual, but just says "support the car". The owners Manual probably gives the answer, but one did not come with the car.

    Thanks

    Hi Don

The User manual isn't very helpful here. It only talks about the original jacking points for the scissors jack. I put the axle stands on the rear subframe when I overhauled my brakes, so it works for me. Will be interesting to see what others say that may be different.

I use the bolt heads on the floor pan, where the bracing strap attatched to the subframe is fitted, to save straining the bushes, or if you have flat topped axle stands, actually on the strap where it is supported by the floorpan, then it cant slide off the bolt head.

        Hi Don,
The first thing to say is avoid using the nose of the diff.
If I just need to take the rear wheels off I usually try to support under the trailing arm or second choice, towards the outside of the rear subframe. When I removed the rear subframe I used as large a piece of timber as I could to spread the load across the rear edge of the floor.

Thanks all. The subframe it is. Because of the ramps size, I can't put a stand anywhere else.

Since I bought the car about a month ago, I have spent more time underneath it than in it. We are getting to know each other - oil leaks, rusty bits etc. No real rot though, just needs some underseal work here and there.

            Hi Don

I was the same in the very early days. Just got the car home and things started to go wrong, so spent quite a bit of last winter underneath it. All up and running again for the hot weather we had a month or two back. All felt worthwhile with the roof down and going for a blast! Hope you get the same feeling soon

i use the end of rear floorpans .strong axle stands and lengths of wood placed in the stands to protect the metal of the floorpan and spread the load.obviously your floor pans need to be in sound condition
