I have just discovered that ebay have introduced a minimum limit of £50 on any reserve price. So if you are selling something that you expect to get at least £25 for, but want to add a reserve of say £20, you have to enter £50!!! What kind of madness is that.
they have also introduced a minimum difference of 40% between the start price and the Buy-it-now price. So if you start a listing at£100, the Buy-it-now has to be a min of £140.
Are they just trying to make more money??

The £50 minimum reserve has been in place for a while. You have to pay more to have a starting price that reflects what the reserve would have been.
There is no doubt you get less bids on items with a higher starting price. I complained to ebay about it and got nowhere.
Didnt know about the 40% thing though.
That is just a money making rule I'm sure. Ebay though will say that their "members" have requested the changes. Ebay is fast becoming another online supermarket. You just deal with different suppliers. Still get the odd bargain though ;-)
Yes, the £50 minimum reserve has been in for some time, but I wasn't aware of the recent changes mentioned. Looks like they are getting further and further away from the original concept in order to make bigger profits.

I recently discovered the 140% rule but I'm not sure it's a bad thing. Genuine sellers of stuff people actually want, know well that a low starting price is the best strategy for a good final price. More bidders will put in bids initially, or watch and bid later. I haven't put a reserve on anything for ages for the same reason and I haven't had an item for sell for less than I was looking for.
Not sure whether it only applies to eBay in Germany, but for small value items they've just doubled the sales commission from 4% to 9% effective mid June!!!
I'm now running about photographing all of my bits and pieces before this deadline comes!
I just checked on the ebay site. We are already getting clobbered for 10% fees. By the time the listing fees have been paid it's no cheaper than a "real" auction room.
I think it could and its a shame that we don't use it. I have used it a couple of times to sell things. I still look at it but as you say Chris, there isn't a great deal for Stags. I think I would look at it daily if second hand stuff was appearing for our cars and would use it more
i have only added a reserve twice - both occasions when selling cars - everything else goes with a 99p starting price, i let the market decide the selling price - Simples
