Top Gear Top Tip "If you're going to buy a convertible buy one that was designed to be a convertible in the first place" Have you checked out the price of parts? From experience you'll need lots.

Reminds me of a Cinquecento "convertible" we hired on holiday in Greece one year... I think Dmitri was very proud of his angle grinder, but it ended up looking like a cross between a Fiat and a pram - you couldn't open the boot because the hood had poppers all around the bottom edge, to the bodywork and the bootlid, which was supposed to open downwards :-)

I have always found BMW's and the 3 series in particular to be quite reliable and not need many replacement parts.

However they aren't the cheapest when they are needed, especially if they are for an M car - but that won't be a worry in this case.

Kevin, I have indeed sold my 1977 Stag for a 2002 BMW M Sport 325 convertable, and I can tell you (having ownded it for about 2 months now) it is not only better in every conceivable way, it is far, far better. And that comes from somebody who has owned 6 Stags in his time who has done more than his bit to provide the Rimmer brothers and Graham Paddock with their wages over the past 24 years. The BM has done 45K miles, is un-marked and only cost me £500 more than I got for the Stag. Of course I know you guys like getting out of your Stags when it starts to rain to put up the hood, and I'm sure with petrol at a premium you don't mind in the least funding 23 mpg. I could go on but I don't want to be hounded out of the club just yet!

I realise this must be very disappointing news for all of you who have poured bucket loads of cash trying to keep your old Stags roadworthy and looking nice (just as I did) but let's face it, 1960/70s BL build quality left an awful lot to be desired.

(Am ducking for cover as usual)

I'm with the stag people, it doesn't and never will sound as good, people don't go ohh what that cause it just another bmw.
it maybe faster, but who cares when you can only do 70mph ....

the stag will be here in 100 years time, the bmw wont cause there are so many people wont see them as a classic.

                    long live the stag

if you want to go back to a stag you could always seee about fitting the seats in the bmw to the stag
                    lol

the BMW is 25 years younger - I would expect it to be better! we all want different things and it would be boring if we didn't !- BM looks to be in very nice condition

1960's british design and 70's build quality vs 21st century German engineering and build quality,no contest really chaps howeveeeeeeeeeeeer I drive a 3 series for daily use and it's reliable, comfortable, powerfull, cheap to run and maintain ( just fitted new discs and pads all round for £120 ) and mind numbingly boring me to death, I'm sure the convertible is as fun as it looks but my best buddy wants a stag because his 3 ltr Porsche doesn't sound like a stag. i rest my case

I don't doubt that the BM is a better car in every tangible way, I wonder what it will be worth in 5 years time or 10 years or more?

My dislike for German cars is as irrational as my liking for my Stag!

                              Totally agree Kevin

I can admire the engineering but I wouldn't touch a BMW with a bargepole - or an Audi for that matter as they're becoming today's BMW

                              Cheers
