    Fuel Sender

I want to change my sender as it permanently showing 1/4 of a tank.

The ROM doesn't offer guidance but the Haynes manual says that, after removing the electrical connections, you unscrew the unit and lift it out. There are three "prongs" standing up on an outer ring, so I assumed you somehow used those to lever the unit round and undo the thread.

However looking at the replacement, there doesn't seem to be a screw thread on that ring as the bottom of it is flat. I can't see therefore how it will fix in unless it is set in mastic or something - is that the orange stuff I can see in the picture?

I haven't tried to uscrew the current one yet and am assuming that Haynes have got it wrong. Does anyone know what to do? If it just force it off and mastic in another?

    hi,
you will need a drift, its a twist fit, the way it is designed is that it tightens as you fit it so the bottom has to be flat, 2 minute job, use the drift on one of the prongs and tap it anticlockwise to undo, it will just lift out then, mark it with tippex to make sure you realign it back correctly as the float only works one way.
you can put the ring on finger tight by turning it clockwise then just tap it to seal it back gain

hope this helps and i've not confused you

        Hello Alan,

Thanks, I of course didn't do a search before posting - duh!

I wil have a try again tomorrow. I am a bit suspicious of the orange stuff I can see around the ring though.

My temp guage seems to operate ok, so am hoping it is just the sender and not the guage / voltage stabiliser.

to be honest i started out the same as yourself, there are 2 cork plugs on the back of the guage, under these are the adjusters, problem is one affects the other when you adjust them, i put my float in water to test it, it was fine, so was the sender, i would guess that the orange stuff could be sealer, who ever fitted it may have put it on as an extra precaution, it's not needed as you could tap the lugs down a little for a tighter fit with the ring, it could have been that they never renewed the seal either.

i was just glad of the help from the lads, it explained it all to me really and made it so much easier.

I fitted the replacement sender this afternoon, and the fuel guage moved on past the 1/4 mark for the first time in my ownership

Not sure how accurate it will be but I shall find out.

            Thanks
