Steering Rack Play

Hi All....been off the forum for a few months due to work and other commitments. This is my first post on the new forum.

Took the Stag for MOT today and it failed on play in the steering rack where the track rod enters the rack. The tester thought the play had caused the seal to wear and fill the gaiter with fluid which poured out of the narrow end when the steering was on full lock.

Can this play be adjusted out or does it seem that an exchange rack will be the way to go? Would prefer to fix my existing rack if possible as otherwise it is very good and I have read some not so good threads about exchange racks.

Hi Nigel, if it's worn where the rack shaft passes through the bush at the end of the body it would need rebusing (not practical) the rack is easy to reseal with a kit from LD it's just a case of being carefull and keeping it nice and clean inside. new seals may buy a bit of time but the play in the bush would take it's toll on them.
