Earth wire on the distributor base plates

I am upgrading the ignition system and I have a very thin wire connecting the base and top plates in the distributor. The new ignition module plate doesn't leave room for the screw that holds it down, so question is....is it critical or can I leave it off?

    Thanks
    Keith
My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Hi Keith ,I believe it is needed .When I fitted my pertronix I think I relocated it to one of the other fixing screws. It just needs to connect the 2 plates together.I does depend on what system you are fitting and if it needs a good earth connection on the top plate, dont think it would be important if you were just putting an optical eye in the distributor.

    Cheers Steve

critical in my experience and the cause of several breakdowns in one of my old MGBs.

might depend on the type/make of electronic ignition, Lumenition does not need it, I think some others might? - others will know depending on what you are fitting

It's an ultraspark which uses a magnet.
