    Speedo cable routing

I was wondering if someone could post a diagram or a photo of how they have their speedo cable routed out of the gearbox on a MOD stag. Reading on the speedy cables website it says that these cables should not have a bend with a radius less than 6", and that the bend should start at least 2" from the ends. This definitely isnt the case with mine - it comes out towards the rear of the vehicle and then does a very tight 180 degree bend up to the top of the transmission tunnel then forwards. My car was originally auto and has been converted in the past - it has the right angle drive converter on the box but the gearbox cross member/mounting gets in the way of moving it so that the cable exits pointing towards the front.

Can anyone advise? perhaps I have the wrong right angle drive (if there is a wrong one)...

I'm asking all this because my speedo is a bit wavery; I'm going to have it calibrated and overhauled by speedy, but think the cable bend may be a problem in itself.

I`m certain the speedo cable from a MOD gearbox connects to the speedo angle drive facing forward, and not as your`s is described.
The angled speedo drive is common to several Triumph gearboxes and should only need to be loosened to enable it to be rotated to face forward, I would suggest a new MOD speedo drive cable as I doubt the correct cable would have sufficient length to do a 180 turn and enter from the rear.

      Hi,

the Angle Drive should be facing forward towards the front of the car and the cable connects to the drive between the gearbox cross-member and the box itself. It is fiddely to get it to go in, but with a bit of patience it can be done. I lowered my cross member to ease the job - but others have mentioned they have done it with the cross member in situ. The cable enters the car on the drivers side of the trans tunnel behind the footrest.

The cable as now supplied is 60 inches in length, and you will probably find it is just a little too long. Lose the extra inches below the car, rather than behind the dash.

          Hi,

Just changed the gearbox so the right angle joint was 2" from my nose - it ought to point forwards. The cable seems far too long (Brian's point) so somebody may have tried to loose the length by routing it round the box. I use some wire and clip mine to the gearbox drain plug to stop it dangling down. I'll see if I can get a photo and then I'll see if I can post it!!

Peter at LD researched thiis very thoroughly for me a few years ago. The cable I broke was considerably shorter than the new one. There were differing figures for all the configurations, of manual, overdrive, auto, LHD, RHD, but it seems manufacturers have settled for a one size fits all, viz 60 inch, cable
One other point Peter uncovered was quote ' I have found this comment on the internet. The right angle drive should be fitted directly to the threaded bush on the gearbox tail casing immediately above the gearbox cross-member and is there mainly to allow the speedo cable to sweep round the cavity without being kinked.' I had already draped my cable to avoid kinks by then, but for Peter and Jpyke it might be worth looking at possible options, in addition to forward and back, for the right angle drive. Good luck

Hmm this is interesting. When I tried to rotate mine so it faced forwards the cross member was completely in the way. I wonder if my MOD conversion isnt quite standard - perhaps the wrong right angle drive has been used. A pic would be a real help here... Thanks all.

Almost impossible to photograph, perhaps someone will have a car on a ramp (MOT?) and can provide a better view but here is my attempt

Aha that's excellent that shows me what I need to know. Many thanks indeed Peter!

I'm about to get a new cable from Speedy to suit my new speedo (one of the Holden's Classic/Smiths). I want to be sure on two things:-

                    1. There is an angle drive on the gear box that should face forwards and that it is immediatley above a cross member.
                    2. The correct length for the cable should be 50" and not the 60" as supplied by the usual Triumph vendors.

I have a manual gearbox with type J overdrive.

                    Cheers
