Help with a garden Waterbutt (honest!) Not Stag related....

Here's a connundrum - spent an hour in the rain last night rolling around on the lawn....

My garden waterbutt needs a new tap. But for the life of me I cannot see how to fit it - I just can't get down inside to attach the securing nut as my shoulders are too wide to fit in the top. I don't have a long reach spanner and it's driving me mad. My wife suggested to lower in a small child by the ankles, but I don't have one of those handy.

At times like these, Stag repair seem easy in comparison!

Dave How about you get the nut in a big ring spanner gaffer taped to a length of wood. Someone can hold this against the hole while you screw the tap into the nut?

    Cheers Johny

Do you have any small children?

Alternatively would it be easier to buy a new butt?

        Dave,

You could always try working out and losing a bit of size of your shoulders, or buy another water butt.

        Sorry could,nt resist. Steve

you could cut the bottom off the water butt then you could easily fit the tap

True - or block up the hole and use a bucket!

Stick a long piece of wire thro' the hole from the outside. Put some adhesive on the nut and slide it down the wire inside the barrel, (adhesive side down). Stick your finger through the hole and through the nut. hold the nut with your finger and slide the nut into position over the hole. If you use a contact adhesive you will be able to let go of the nut almost immediately. Leave to set and screw on the tap. Terry

                Thanks for all the advice.
I used Prince Jonny's solution, and it worked a treat.
First time the tap ended up pointing upwards, but eventually managed a tight fit in the right place.

Blimey - I maight even have to try to mend something on the car next! I'm becoming an engineer!
