    Carb problem

Hi Guys - another issue with my carbs

When at idle a small lever on the carb pushes in a small brass piston. All is fine on the offside but on the nearside the piston is not pushed in . The piston will move freely when pushed by hand but there appears to be a problem with the lever being either incorrect or bent. I enclose a picture for your perusal.

    1) What does the lever/brass piston do?

    2) How could it be corrected?

3)What is the effect of not having it working correctly?

    Any thoughts gratefully received

As far as I can tell, that little valve is to do with the venting arrangement. The petrol vapour from the float chambers is redirected depending on whether or not the throttle is open. My carbs are different to yours but the principle will be the same. Both carbs are setup the same.
Not sure what the effect is, but I had a real problem hot starting before I rebuilt my carbs. The valve is a facory set item and not user servicable but one of mine seemed to have been stuck in until I pulled it out. May just be coincidence though!

          Hi, Glenn.

I have the same book and had a look through this whilst in discussions with Darren 'off Forum'. I couldn't find any reference to these pistons in the book - but maybe I was tired as it was late and I had been trying (without success) to finish the bathroom before travelling offshore.

I have the same carbs as Darren and tried sorting out other issues with them at my place a few weeks ago. Didn't spot the problem he has now identified at the time as there were so many other problems to sort in a short space of time (no advance/retard tube, no tubes to air inlet valves (therefore 2 induction leaks through open pipes), choke only attached to one carb, fouled plugs, no overdrive (broken gearlever wire but still no overdrive despite achieving 12v at the solenoid when switch operated).

I do recall getting my car tuned by a Leyland trained tuner several years ago and he had a devil of a job getting both carbs balanced at tickover and at higher revs, until he spotted a problem with one of the operating levers for these valves. He whipped one off andfiled off some casting flash which had been there since Day 1. When refitted he was able to balance the carbs throughout the range, so they do have some effect.

Hopefully someone can come to Darren's rescue soon as he has a nice Stag, spoilt only by poor finishing off by the previous owner. If he can get these problems resolved he should have a car to enjoy.

          Darren,

If no-one can assist via this forum, I will have another go when I come home in a couple of weeks. It would be nice to get it fixed before our 'Drive-it Day' outing around Plymouth on the 20th.

Thanks for your kind offer, I have checked the Stag Haynes book & also the workshop manual to no avail, these valves appear not to be listed anywhere. Please let me know if there is any info in the haynes carb book though. If so maybe the relavant page could be scanned/e-mailed or copied/posted. That would probably be easier than sending whole book.

            Thanks once again

            Darren

            Dave

I hope the weather in the north sea is as good as sunny Devon: glorious sunshine here. Thanks once again for your input/advise. I will hopefully resolve this issue before your return:?I will let you know. I really want to get her running well so I can start on the numerous cosmetic issues.

It is just odd that the bracket which operates the valve & clearly isn't does not appear to be bent or misformed in any way.

I would say she is running conciderably better than when you last saw her, had a lovely drive into Plymouth this morning. But as with most things it is the 80/20 rule which always applies.

            Thanks once again Dave

                  Stuart/Darren,

The page from the ROM, and the pictures you have posted, indicates that this car has both types fitted. The offside being the earlier type and the nearside being the later. I have to confess I did not spot that during the work I did, but then again I wouldn't have been expecting it (that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it :P).

What effect would this have on the operation? What other differences are there between the two carbs, and will it be possible to set them up correctly? Or would it be better to source a matched pair (or at least one to match up with one of those fitted)?

                  Any thoughts out there?

                  Dave

Sorry, ignore that drivel. I have just looked back at the thread again and the second picture posted was by StagnJag and that shows the later type. I could say 'too many white Stags on here, but that would only start a few others off on another tangent

Well you are almost rightWhite is the most popular colour(maybe for a reason). A bit like 45% of all Larger Mercs being Silver. That is the colour which people want and this makes a silver Merc easier to sell on the 2nd hand market.

Though to be fair I do like the colour of yours Stuart

Stuart and I are like the ethnic minority of the Stag world with Topaz and Java - there may not be many of us but we make a lot of noise.......
