    PAS gone

Last night after my power steering tightening up a few times, it totally packed up. Manual steering is ok but my muscles just aren't up to parking etc

I've checked and fluid level is ok with no significant leaks and belt is tight.

So, any suggestions of where I start looking? I've got a spare pump so I may go down the route of a modern mechanic (No, not plug it in to a computer) and try substituting the pump which will rule that out or in as the culprit.

If replacing the pump makes no difference then I presume it must be in the rack.

Any advice or suggestions gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Julian

            Julian,

Have you not just rebuilt the front suspension etc? May be a clue there, don't know what.

            Jeff.

Hi Julian, although rare, these pumps do occasionally fail, mine did a few weeks ago. You could try cleaning the valve just inside the high pressure union, but for the work involved, you may as well fit your other pump, if it packed up fairly quickly that's most likely to be the answer. Good luck and do let us know, Martin.

Martin, could the pump valve be the reason for my 'jerky' steering, for want of a better description.

                Jeff.

Plug it into an oil pressure gauge instead.

Hi Jeff, that valve blocks sometimes to varying degrees, producing some odd symptoms, I would certainly give it a go. Martin.

Thanks everybody for your various suggestions - maybe excluding Drew

Air locks would surprise me as everything has been fine for at least the last 500 miles since I rebuilt the front suspension and there haven't been any other symptoms so I hope it's not related to the rebuild.

Swapping the pump shouldn't take long - just as long as I don't run in to the same problems as poor Easyrider, with his tragic 'tale of woe'

I spoke to Peter at LD this afternoon - because if it turns out that I need a rack then I'll be buying one of his - and he felt the symptoms pointed to the pump so, fingers crossed and I'll let you guys know how I get on.

Just hope it doesn't rain tomorrow !

                      Cheers

                      Julian

                        Best of luck !

Cross posting this useful link that I've since found http://www.triumphstag.net/start/tec...g/steering.htm (as it might be beneficial in future for others seaching for PAS posts)

It WAS a knackered PAS pump

And the very second I finished it, the heavens opened up - maybe my luck is changing

Thanks again for everyone's advice and suggestions.

                          Cheers

Hi Julian, glad that you got it sorted with no hassle. No worries like that here it is a lovely sunny day in this part of Fife. Stag oil change yesterday so it is the garden today.
