For some time now I have been experiencing an embarrassing problem with backfiring when decelerating in 3rd and 4th gears. Having recently had the engine tuned hasn't solved the problem and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions.

Check the exhaust system to see if you can see any places where it leaks perhaps? -

Just a thought, I had the same trouble with a Stag I owned. Fiddled with the mixture, fitted exhaust manifold gaskets, refitted exhausts but to no avail. It always popped on the overun. Its a while ago but if memory serves a very experienced Stag expert ( cheers Pete) pointed out that there is a device on the carburettors designed to prevent this occurrance. I overhauled my carbs with a good quality service kit and hey presto, no popping on the afterun. Not sure if by backfiring you mean my irritating "popping" or a very significant backfire capable of making people duck but thought I'd mention my experience anyway.Comment

yep mine does that also but only normally after a bit of spirited motoring at the non-economical end of the rev rangeStags and Range Rover Classics - I must be a loonyComment

Have you checked the ignition timing it could be out..that would cause your car to backfire.
