    Windscreen Replacement

    Hi Guys

Went to fire up the Stag tonight as the sun was out, when I got the car out of the garage I noticed to my horror a 4 inch crack in the windscreen.

I'm insured with the clubs recomended insurance company RH Insurance has anyone on here had a windcreen replaced through them?

Is it just the £50 excess I have to pay? & how long will I have to wait to get a replacement? I'm giving them a call in the morning

    Cheers
    Cliff

    Hi Cliff
Be careful! a certain national windscreen replacement company were let loose on my car by my insurance company whilst they fitted the new screen ok they were unable to refit the chrome trim, after about an hour of struggling, I caught them trying to stick it in with mastic it was all a bit of a mess.
    Cheers

When we recently had our Alfa 147 windscreen replaced, it was by an older fitter who commented on the Stag in the drive and we got onto old school windscreens. Apparently he's fitted over 60 Stag's in his time and used to do a lot of work for the Suffolk SOC, not sure if he covers your area but definitely Norfolk & Suffolk but apparently the company, Auto Windscreens, only send out their more experienced fitters for classics (supposedly) as they're too much for a modern skilled bonded fitter.

I would that on the approved RH scheme that an experienced classic windscreen fitter would be a key requirement of that approval.

Whoever you choose, don't forgot that whilst an insurance will always want you to use their 'approved' fitter you are free to use whichever company you feel fit to choose but just make sure they can bill the insurance co. directly and you just pay the excess (much less hassle than paying full whack and then trying to get reimbursed by insce co)

          Hi Cliff

I had my windscreen replaced on the club insurance scheme nov 09.I took it to Auto windscreens in Chelmsford and they had a fitter who does classics. The service was so good i felt compelled to send a letter to their head office and trust me i dont do that very often.
The only problem they had at the time is they only had mk2 screens which was ok for me.

          Andy.

              Cliff,

Don't know if you've thought about it but when my windscreen cracked I brought a new rubber to go with the new screen, if yours is 30 years old it may struggle to seal to a new screen. Be careful though there are two types of rubber both fit the car but your chrome trim will only fit in the right one. In my experience Autoglass can be quite good if you go to their branch when they aren't busy...

              Regards

Went to the Auto Glass Branch at Chelmsford today to have a chat about my replacement windsreen, when I asked should I supply a new windscreen rubber for the replacement windscreen as mine is perished, the chap said that a new rubber would be supplied by them, which I was surprised at?

When I asked if they had replaced many Stag Windscreen's in the past the chap said that they have a fitter who has been fitting windscreens for over 20 years who works for them, and he works on all the classic cars that come in."he is fitting a new windscreen on a Classic Bentley tomorrow which was already in their work shop"

Hopefully it all go'es without any hitches I'll keep you all posted

                Cliff
                Many Thanks

                  Cliff,

Surprises me too but good news if they can do it and refit the trim, I'd ask for your old one back just to make sure they are fitting a new one - "professional" outlets always make me suspicious when something you'd expect to be difficult is apparently easy. Sounds like a good find though and anyone doing a Bentley must be confident in their ability.

                  Regards,

                  Peter
