    Time-Sert Plug Repair Kit

    Hi,
Checking my spark plugs today and found one of them has galled slightly and damaged the thread in the head . The plug has gone back in again after cleaning the thread, but I am afraid it may not last too long.

Has anyone got a Time-Sert kit I could borrow, or know where I could get one at a reasonable price?

Yes, seen that Ian. Looks like the seller is trying to sell one kit through two auctions so he can charge 2 lots of postage :

I have found kits on eBay from £4.99 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

      to £200 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sykes-Spark-Pl...item483b8df325

Not keen on buying the latter, but not convinced the cheap end items are any good.

And have you noticed that the postage charges are different on those two ?

Dave, I'm in a slightly similar position to you. I was doing a compression test on my car a couple of weeks ago and couldn't understand why I couldn't get it to screw in to No 6.

Eventually I realised that the compression tester only picked up on the first 3 or 4 threads, whereas a plug screwed into something like 6 or 7. And you can guess what - the first 3 threads are stripped on that cylinder

I very gingerly reinserted and tightened the plug thinking that I'll have to fit an insert soon. Now a Helicoil is one thing but doing a plug hole fills me with terror !

Are you pretty happy about doing the job? If so maybe if you find a good quality, reasonable price insert kit then perhaps I could come down to you and we could do the two cars at the same time and we can work something out re the price?

If you're interested in something like this, do you want to PM me?

        Cheers

        Julian

Thanks Julian. Doing the job doesn't worry me and I now have a couple of options. Will visit my classic-friendly garage on Monday and have a chat with them before deciding which way to go.

I bought one of the cheap insert sets as per your link. The inserts are fine but the tap was not up to cutting the remaining thread out and then cutting the oversize thread. It simply would not 'start'.
As my heads were already off I drilled out the damaged thread and then the tap (and insert) went in fine.

Thanks Alan. That is the sort of thing that puts me off buying cheap. I am also concerned that the steel quality may be poor and the last thing I want is for the tool to snap off

Hi Dave: I have a Uni-Thread kit - M14x1.25 S/P 3/4R - which Pete B. got for me when I had a plug thread problem on the white Stag. The firm is local, somewhere on the outskirts of Paignton. You are welcome to borrow the kit though, if you wish?
