Engine rebuild parts best place to buy.

    Hi

As most of you know i am faced with a engine out job for a siezed jackshaft it`s going to be a diy job to keep costs down, and i am faced with the while it`s out syndrome so oil pump, piston rings, crank shells are going to be checked and replaced if needed.

I know it`s a on going question but who would you recommend for internal engine parts??

    Cheers

I know who I wouldn't recommend for cost and quality as they are just a retailer.

Really sorry that you have this agro Adrian. I would speak to the likes of someone who rebuilds engines but does not sell the parts and who does a good job, Favershams or example. It would be good to hear the do's and donts'

      Hi Adrian,

prior to this the engine was sound from what I had seen and heard, obviously you need to get the jack shaft bearings sorted by a machine shop but I don't see why you can't reuse the new chains etc you just fitted. If I was in your unfortunate position I would just put new shells in if the crank is OK and an oil pump. if you start putting new rings in then it will need honing and you'll be probably then better off going down the short engine route. (I think that would have been my option to be honest) For what it's worth all the parts for Dean's engine have come from James Paddock the only issue we had was the crank was supplied with std thrust washers but needed +.005 ones to bring it in tolerance.

      Ian.

        Adrian,

Really sorry to hear the news... I would try to look at who actually made the components not just who is selling them, you ought to do as good a post mortem as possible and try to understand why the failure occured and from that what components could have been damaged / over stressed. Id replace the cam chains, they have done you good service in not snapping, I know the while its out syndrome and the problem is stopping somewhere.

        Good luck!

Most major internal engine components are made by county, so just pick your retailer. The exception is timing chains, plenty to choose from, and after a jackshaft seizure I would change the crank sprocket on that side too, the teeth may be strained.
I would agree with Ian about the rings, I have fitted rings in quite a few different engines over the years, but quite frankly wear rates have always been awful and I now recon it is cheaper long term to either leave well alone or go for a rebore.
I have stripped engines with over 50,000 miles on the crank that didn't even need the bearings changing, and others with only a few thousand where the crank was knackered, it just depends on the quality of the parts fitted at the time, and the degree of cleanliness used when the engine was assembled
I had my jackshaft bearing rebushed last year after it seized, cost less than £100, but I was fortunate in having a good second hand jackshaft lying about. Significantly this engine now hits full oil pressure by 1500revs hot, sometimes I think a lot of oil escapes through worn jackshaft bearings, and it is still on the old oil pump. I did buy a new one, but on examination there was nothing wrong with the old one so I refitted it.
