help with the electrics on a MK1 stag

Had a problem with the electrics on the way home from France last week and on checking the two brown wires to the contol box had broken off from the terminal connect. After finding the problem I soldered the wires back on an re charged the battery BUT it looks like there is no charge coming from the alternator.
How can I check the wires to see what is not working, What voltage or current should I expect at the control box or regulator
    many thanks

hi roger simple continuity tests with a multimeter ,this will determine the paths but resistance tests on the same will tell if they are up to it.if your not concerned with originality i would upgrade the alternator and junk the periphery eg external control box.then you will have a more robust and reliable system.

      Hi Roger
Just took this picture with the phone so excuse the quality,it's the relay that bolts to the turret, this one packed up because the two contacts did not meet to make the switch when I increased the revs, try puting a peg to join the two to see if this makes a difference.

          Hi Steve

I was planning to get the James Paddock alternator jps562p which I am guessing is the upgrade. Is the fitting straightforward, ie removing the Relay unit and Control Unit and connecting the heavy brown cable from the battery to the new alternator, and extending the brown/purple lead from the control unit (which I think is on the bulkhead) to the small terminal of the alternator? Are the mountings the same for the new alternator as the old?
