    polishing wheels

my stag alloys have good paint but the alloy bits need attention. i have a set of tyres to put on but want the wheels to look better before i do.

1200 wet and dry followed by solvo autosol, brasso wax, cost 10hrs and a tenner, or take them to the local refurber and pay 50 sheets but have the new tyres fitted by them saving a tenner a corner?

Why not buy a set of refurbed wheels off ebay, then sell yours as they are, they don't look bad, I'm sure you'll pay less than £250 net

I am just about to start this job as well, I took the spare out today to see if this needed doing, it's brand new but the tyre on it is from 1983 and made by ESSO!

The tyre is also 185HR14 and all my other tyres are 175/80, I was going to put the spare on while I do a wheel at a time in the evenings watching telly!

                Justfinished mine.

                Per wheel:

Apply Nitromoors and remove old laquer with steel wool 1 1/2 hours per wheel. Polish up with wet and dry 1/2 hr. Dry off for a couple of hours. Repaint with Hammerite 1/2 hour. Hard graft to get a nice satin finish. I suppose you could go on polishing for a mirror finish - am I bovered - no!

I read on the net about a guy who jacks the rear end of his Stag and thenwith the engine running and in gear, polishes his wheels using the rear axle as a lathe with wet and dry and solvol.

I've never tried it myself, watch those fingers!

                  regards,

                  Raoul

Be careful when purchasing wheels from ebay, I have just purchased a set and am sending them back , poishing is great but black paint is poor, very shiny but puddles of paint have formed and set, also runs in paint, I suspect too much paint has been applied in one go.( make thatI know too much paint has been applied)

Fair play to seller he is taking them back and refunding.

Just had mine refurbished at a place near Addlestone, Surrey.

Theydid a brilliant job really impressed. I had all five wheels refurbished, this included the removal of the old tyres a strip paint and the fitting of my new tyres (that I delivered with the wheels). All for £250 including the dreaded VAT only extra I had to pay was for the disposal of the old tyres £10.

Might i add before i took them to have someone else do them, I had spent well over three hours trying to tidy one wheel.

If you want me to give you the details just let me know and i will post it on the forum also have pics if you want to see the workmanship.

                            Thanks

                            Peter.

I've used these people, admittedly for a modern alloy wheel repair, but they were quick and cheap
