    Waterproofing the hood

Over the weekend I gave the softop two coats of Renovo, which used about 1/2 lit. Today it has just lashed down and I was watching the rain bounce off the fabric.

Here's a pic of it beading on the roof, and you can see it running straight off the vertical parts.

For those who were asking about products, this one works well.

Nice picture, and a good illustration. Once a year will see it right. The sad thing, is that you're only waterproofing the stitching but that would look uneven. Not cheap but good stuff. Martin.

It's indeed good stuff but a tad expensive. When my Renovo ran out, I took to buying a general use waterproofer which was a third the price and as far as I can tell does the same job, without staining, colouring or marking.

Renovo's great stuff. I last did mine about 8 years ago and it's only just started to seep a bit this week, and that was in weather I wouldn't normally be out in the Stag in!

Hi Piscean57. I used Renovo HOOD REVIVER on my Stag and it made my tired, faded hood look like brand new! Did you use this on your hood or did you use Renovo ULTRA PROOFER? My hood now LOOKS great and at the moment doesn't leak, but I wondered if Ultra Proofer might be a good idea to keep it that way?

I know you weren't specifically asking me... but I used both the Reviver to re-black the hood (it's essentially just a dye) and then the Ultra Proofer is the waterproofing part, so I'd be inclined to treat it with that too.

As soft tops are a particular issue for me at the moment, I am just as interested to see that your soft top seems to be like mine (looks too long and flappy by your B post/rear wing join)

Avoid applying anything to the soft top when its sunny and liable to dry quick.

Nojackshaft are you going to the Felixstowe show on sunday?

Hello Nojackshaft...Wendy is right. I used just the Ultraproof.

Peter, as far as I know the hood is supposed to be like that unless anyone else knows different.

My soft top was Christened yesterday while I was sorting out the steering alignment issue. The 'german' mohair purchaced from Paddocks is not, repeat not, water proofed. Although the 'shower' wasn't that heavy or prolonged, it was enough to soak through the seams to the internal beige lining. I'm just hoping, now that its back in the dry, that I dont get left with water marks! I'm sure I enquired as to whether weather proofing was necessary on a new hood and was told that it shouldn't. Oh well live and learn, proofer on order.
Just in case, how can water marks be removed?

Hi John, it's very unlikely there will be any water marks once it's dried properly. Martin.

I used Renovo restorer and waterproofer and never again, the black restorer leaked through and stained the near perfect interior brown, left an indelible ragged join mark down along the top, the waterproofer ...... well water still leaked through. Rubbish. Used Fabseal afterwards and it does what it says on the tin. That said renovo screen restorer is fabulous stuff and I highly recommend.

Hi Mark, Didn't get your message until today (Tuesday) but the Felixstowe show on Sunday was motorbikes only. I'm not into bikes! Must have been quite a few there as I could hear them from my house.

If the stains are permanent then you have every right to complain to the suppliers under the Consumer Protection regulations. A soft top hood should be waterproof from the start or it isn't fit for purpose. Particularly as the supplier told you it didn't need treating. Don't forget that anything bought online or by phone is covered by the Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations.

                              Hi Nojackshaft
Someone said it was cars and bikes, checked before I set off and noticed it was only bikes and it was going to be misty on the east coast so decided to head to North Norfolk.

                              Hi Sheepdip
I had exactly the same happen to my hood, the renovo reviver soaked through the hood and left the inside beige with black stains, thinking about doing the whole inside of the hood black to tidy it up,must add the PO had the new hood fitted and its not the best quality mohair hood i've seen.
