    Brake shoe contamination

    Hi,

I replaced my leaking drum brakecylinders, which i noticed because of quite a high loss of brake fluid. However, my drum shoes look uncontaminated with fluid, which puzzles me as the fluid loss was quite high, almost a full reservoir, but over a period of 4 weeks.

If the fluid has seeped onto the shoes, will it be obvious?

    Thanks

    It certainly will.

If the fluid is not obvious around any of the pipe joints, cylinders, footwell, garage floor etc then it can only be going into the servo. Have you noticed a white smoke from the exhaust during this period? If so, itcould be the brake fluid being sucked from the servo into the inlet manifold, and then burnt. Maybe you have a dodgy master cylinder seal or two.

Did both halves of the reservoir lose fluid?
If only the rear cyls are leaking you are likely only to see a drop in the fluid level in the front half of the reservoir, assuming the PDWA seals are OK.

If you lost fluid in the rear half then there is a leak in the front brake system, or the servo is sucking it out.

Also check for fluid on the rear of the inner wing, under the servo.
