brake pedal switch & brake lights

MOT tomorrow. Investigating why brake lights have decided not to work. Pedal switch also decides to fall apart! I wonder if they'll accept an explanation about how the lights would work if the switch did? Connected the two switch wires and they still didn't work, so there is a fault else where. Crap! Now what?

Good try but I don't think that they will wear that excuse. Do you have a test meter or lamp? If so check that you have 12v at the joined up terminals of the brake light switch. Do the indicators work? If not check the fuse and connections. Do the rear side lamps work? If so your earth connections are ok. Are you getting 12v at the bulbs? Is there a night dimming relay? Are all connections made? Assume bulbs are ok. Sorry so many questions but by answering them you will get to the problem.

Rear side lights are fine, everything else works. Will check the rest tomorrow. Expected to fail MOT anyway due brake issues but when its half price I can find out how bad and fix for second test, for less than the normal price. That was the plan anyway. Thanks for your help.

        Hi John,

i had the same problem with my indicators, having purchased new buld holders, the problem still persisted, the only resolution i found was to weld earth wires from the buld holders and fix back to the body. Now all lights work brilliantly no more problems.

Might not be your problem, but get a piece of wire, pull the holder out, place the wire on the earth and take to the body, may well work.

        Rob.

Bulb holders are now available (from Tony Hart) with individual earth tabs fitted. Bought a set a few years ago and the rear lights are much improved, with no failures since.

Drove in with the Stag yesterday and pulled up behind my daily car. Despite it being bright sunshine, there, reflected in the back of my other car, were my sidelights on

Checked the light switch and it wasn't on Went to get out of the car and they went off

It then all became clear As I got out, I took my foot off the brake pedal so, what's wrong? Although I can't work on the car today, I'm happy to take a very large bet that it's a bad earth on the brake lights allowing a back feed through the sidelight bulbs.

Ah well, another job for the list Thanks Dave for the tip about Tony Hart's bulb holders.

            Cheers

              Rob, DJT & Julian,
All of the above fixed the problems utilising half of Unilever's resources (I drove to work in the Stag today, in traffic, never done that before, a little paranoid about no brake lights). Managed to salvage the switch, it needed a good clean to get rid of the high resistance it was imposing. The lights still didn't work though, power at switch-out none at lights! Traced the fault to a bad connection at the multi-plug connector inside the nearside 'a' post foot-well, lights worked, one bright, one dim. Established that the fault was with the holder (earth feed through side lights), I bodged a earth wire from the bulb to the local earth, both lights bright! Result. I felt slightly less paranoid about travelling to my Five o'clock MOT. It failed of course, laugh, rear left indicator didn't work of all things checked before hand, it did after I wiggled it but not to the examiners satisfaction. Both headlights too high. Engine running too rich. Play in the front near side suspension arm ((new)rubber bush's steel liner not clamped sufficiently). Brakes good but spongy, possibly needs bleeding (again). And an advisory that my rear near side rear wheel bearing (new) appears to have too much play, needs to be adjusted. Well I think that's not too bad, £25 well spent. Sort everything this weekend, re-test next week and hopefully she will fly through.
              Thanks again.

Well, aren't I just glad nobody took me up with a very large bet

Ok, symptoms are as above but it wasn't poor earths at the bulbholders, or anywhere else for that matter.

I've never seen this problem before, on any car. Does anybody think they know what it could have been ?

I'll be impressed if you can work it out

                Cheers

                  Faulty bulb?
One element fails and shorts against the other one causing it to light up.

Klever Klogs Kevin - nearly, but you're not quite there as both elements are still intact and function.

However you have just about got it because it is a faulty bulb. However the insulation must have broken down inside the body, allowing the two circuits to short together somewhere out of sight.

The bulb itself looks like it's in perfect working order

                    Cheers

I'd love to know how old that bulb is ? Martin.
