Well that made you open up the post didn't it ?

I've been having much trouble with A.T.F on the garage floor.I had the car on a friends ramp and found said liquid coming from the area in front of the torque convertor (Automatic) and the rear of the engine.

A mate who owns a garage and is more used to american metal looked at the auto box fluid level by means of the dipstick and expressed his opinion that he thought the dip stick is far too short-about 18" long.He reasoned that if one looks to where it goes down toward the box it would barely go around the first bend let alone the second or indeed into the box itself.The stick is a spring like affair with a cap and loop/handle on the top).

If this is the case and the dipstick is too short,I am merrily toping up with ATF to get what I perceive as the correct level but am in fact overfilling my box and causing the fluid to either overflow or pressurise and to be forced past the front seal.

Would someone with a 35 box measure their dipstick for me ? this may help me a great deal.

mine is an auto and is exactly as alan said....hope this helps(bw35 autobox)...del......

So Martin 14 1/2ins is ok I've got the tube with the banjo bolt am I correct in thinking there are two different types banjo and one that screws stright into the sump pan (saw this on rimmers site) it's just that the tubes look different lengths. Graham

The only thing is on your car discription you have BW65

Sorry Graham, I don't know about the BW65, except that the dipstick has a yellow plastic handle.
Are you checking with the engine hot and only just switched off, or still idling ? The torque converter has a non return valve that usually packs up at this age, and most of them leak a bit as they cool and the TC starts to drain back. I'm not going to take pictures of mine, but I'm certain yours is identical. Martin.

No Martin I've got a 35 it was just that Alan D who has written on the forum that his dipstick is 20 1/2 ins long and he has a 35 but on his write up thingy where his listed all that's on his car he's got BW65 (if you look at the postings you'll see what I mean) which has thrown me into a panic!! espically if the stick should be 6ins longer I'me ok with the checking ect thank's ( I used to be a machinic in this era and rebuilding auto boxes was part of my job, I'me NOT trying to sound big headed here) but the length of the stick is somthing I would not have clue about. That's why I badly need your help here. Thank's Martin for replying to this. Cheer's Graham

sorry staggared you are right it is a 65, dont know what got me thinking it was a 35, apolagies guys for the confusion, so mine is right then for a 65. what a dumb thing to do, must have been the old JD and coke
