And it was going so well......

Today I made a start on fitting V Mad's Weber Carb kit, little knowing that the Strombergs were not going to go without a fight.

Removal of the Strombergs went well, until I was left with one piece that refused to go:Stud.jpg

I have tried a 10" grip wrench but the stud will not budge. Does anyone have any suggestions or does someone in the Eastbourne area have a tool that will win the day? The last thing I want is to destroy the thread in the manifold.

    Hi Simon.
I had to Helicoil that thread on mine as it was stripping. Maybe this has happened to yours and the stud has been studlocked in, if so I believe a good heating will break the bond.

    John.

ps If you do mess up the thread, you are welcome to borrow my Helicoil kit.

I haven't got a gas torch but would be more worried about the proximity to fuel lines! I think I'll try the 2 nuts and see how that goes. At worst I will be stuck with a pair of strombergs and have a weber kit for sale :-(

I tried my local B&Q for Stilsons today but they don't have them. Thanlks for the ebay link - I guess you have used it and found it works.

I've got a set of stud extractors at work that should do the job, that stud can't be as tight as a head stud and I got them out OK. If you PM me your address etc I could pop round tomorrow afternoon/early evening. In the meantime spray on lots of penetrating oil!
                Cheers Kevin.

Loads of times Simon ,even if Kev sorts you out this time that little tool is well worth having in your tool box for next time.

                  Cheers Steve

I fitted my Weber a few weeks ago and the stud was quite loose which was surprising but once out I could see the helicoil, then I found that the stud was the wrong way round. The UNF end was in the manifold and the UNC end had the nut on. I managed to source a suitable replacement cap head bolt from Namrick. I also bought a pack each of their assorted UNC and UNF nut and bolt packs, just in case!
My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

I am still hopeful that I will be able to screw the bolt in supplied with the weber kit but thanks for the warning. I am getting used to the fact that there are so many non-standard aspects about the Stag - I have already found that the layout of the relay panel behind the parcel shelf looks nothing like what is shown in the repair manual!

Thanks to Kevin and his stud extractor, progress has been made and I have been able to complete installation of the new carb. The unit supplied by V Mad together with clear step by step instructions and pictures made installation easy and straight-forward. Started first time and idling more smoothly than the strombergs did. Road test yet to be carried out. Thanks guys for all the advice and help.
