Scottish members, where do you send your parts for re-chrome??

More a question for the SOC members North of the border.
Where are they sending their parts for re-chrome. I would like to have some of mine removed and re-chromed once the winter months return, but would like to save a little wonga on delivery charges??

Hi Mike, in my case you are right. I have not had anything rechromed. I suggest that you try Scottish companys that restore Classic cars. Below is a suggestion but I am sure there are other in the 'Forth/Clyde Valley' area.

It depends on their attitude some will recommend someone and others will get it done for you at a cost.

I am also looking for someone in the Newcastle/Northumberland areas. There used to be a firm in South Northumberland (Ashington) but I believe they have gone bust now. Have also heard of another firm in the Darlington/Middlesborough area, but need to check this out. Not sure of any further north towards the border.

Yes your probably right Peter, they will look for a mark up as well. There was a guy in Arbroath apparently but I never did get intouch with him. He was a bit like the Scarlet Pimpernel.
The thing that gets me is the postage to send this type of work South of the border.
The reason I reposted was that I was a bit suprised that none of the Scots lads could suggest anyone at all.

Dave I think it costs a fortune for these rechrome guys to stay in buisness as the local authoritys nail them financially because of the bad chemicals they use and I would imagine they have pretty high disposal costs.
We have a place in Elgin called highland Galvanisers, they will send it somwhere for you but won't say where. They also do blasting and powder coating but refuse to do it to car components, don't know why but there must have been a carry on from someone in the past. They said they would'nt powdercoat my suspension parts as they would not take the responsibility of heat distortion, ????.

A couple of the Escort boys on one of my other forums sent front coil springs for powder coating and afterwards the car sat 2" lower. It seems that the bake temperatures in the oven anneal the steel and effectively make the springs softer. I can't vouch for this, but I guess this is the problem they are referring to.

So no need to spend money on lowering kits, etc. Just stick the original springs in the oven with the Sunday roast.....

Good comment Drew, that's probably what that mob in Elgin had experienced in the past. They did shot blast my parts but would'nt budge on the powder coating

saw a job at glamis castle that had been done in nuneaton and it was very nice .

Mike FABCHROME in cumbernauld 01236 458 451 did chroming for me on my boat they made a good job of it . Ive got more parts to go to them .
