    why oh why oh why!!!!

Why did some idiot when designing the Stag rear suspension decide that the best thread to put in the aluminium swinging arm to hold in the driveshafts and rear hubs (not a matter of unimportance!) was UNF??

I've just braved the weather- rain, hail the lot - replacing all my rear end bushes and subframe mounts with poly and thought I'd better swap out my RH driveshaft assy as I had too much endfloat in the bearing (turns out the hub was rebuilt by a gibbon who hadn't quite worked out what the locktab was for) and the poxystuds started pulling out of the arm when I went to tighten them........

Good job I had a selection of 5/16 UNC bolts and a helicoil kit..... I had expected to helicoil my heads first though.....

What a difference the poly has made though..... 99% of my clonks have gone from the back now and Ican get it properly sideways on corners

Now..... bend the credit card and get that 4 speed auto conversion..... it's only money - and the wife doesn't object.. best place to buy the kit??

    Hi Russ,

I recal you mentioning doing this when the weather brightens up. Was it optimism on the forecast or did you expect to get it done before the weather turned?

Forever the glass half full type, I just expected to get wet regardless, and in fairness wasn't disappointed

At least that's one thing crossed off the list longer than Magna Carta, and the absolute gobsmacker to end it was SWMBO agreeing that a 4 speed auto conversion is a good idea, and I should get it done......

This Stag hobby is bl**dy expensive!!

Beware the ulterior motive.... you can buy a lot of shoes and handbags for the price of a 4-speed!:?

            Hello Russ.

Are you going to fit it yourself? if so SOC spares would probably be the nearest place to collect one. I am sure Bob H will clarify detail. If you are having it fitted, then Clive Tate, Faverham Classics or Monarch spring to mind. I went to Clive as he makes it and I am sure can fit them blindfold. Well worth the £200 in my mind. but probably nearer £300 allowing for fuel and fares. If you need photos or advice Bob and I will try.

Order it quick before the wind changes

            John.

In my case I would just be playing catch-up....... I'm taking the Stag to Ireland in the summer for a week, and I will have to tow a trailer just for Nicola's shoes..... in fairness the Stag's boot will be full of tools and spares - I found if you carry the means to fix the car, it doesn't go wrong...... well, nearly 8 months daily use and no actual "stranded by side of road" breakdowns.... it has always got me home!

18 years ago I was pushing out the rear trailing arm bushes by pushing one against the other with a small bottle jack in the middle....not the brightest idea....one of the arms snapped off:shock:

What was more shocking was that the inside cavity was heavily corroded possibly weakening the aluminium arms unseen internally.

At the time, 18 years ago, I just went down to my local BL dealer and I purchased a brand new pair for £50, including new bushes already fitted! ...which I actually removed for nylatron bushes, no such thing as poly bushes back then!

All this talk of the 4 speed conversion is getting me more tempted! whats this talk of a 5 speed version with paddle shifters though in development. Or is it just a rumour?

                      Cheers,

                      Mike.

Anyone ever considered a group buy situation? With all this talk there must be an opportunity for some discount if a number will commit to purchase. It would certainly be a guarantee of work and supply for someone over time,

                        Any thoughts?

Do any of you watch wrecks to riches USA, on there they fit auto boxes that have electronic shiffters so all you see in the car is a panel with buttons on the center console then you also have buttons on the steering wheel for selections!

The boxes are all 4 or 5 speed boxes and have been fitted to loads of different american classics without problems due to no need to have a differnet gear stick etc.

I will try and find some more detials?

It would be great to get a group discount! How many of us are ready to go ahead in the near future? I'm sceptical because I'm not sure Clive Tate needs to give discounts, but I may be speaking out of turn, I have never met him or spoken to him. I just get the impression that he does alright as things are:?

The 5 speed sounds interesting too, wonder how much that would cost?

Not sure that I really want paddle shifts though, I'll reserve judgement 'til I see one finished.
