    ZF 4 speed

So starting from scratch. Assuming I have a rover V8 engined Stag with no gearbox! (I do have a RV8 with a questionable BW35 auto but I am weighing up converting to manual / 4 speed auto. Don't see the point in switching to a BW 65.... is there one though)

What do I need to convert to ZF 4peed auto.

    a) Which Box
    b) Where from (I mean what car)
    c) Bellhousing
    d) Propshaft
    e) Diff?

    Any idea of cost?

    Any advice is good

Have a look at the Monarch site which explains what you need. The ebay one looks good though.
ZF 4 spd box, Datsun shafts, SS exhaust, 38DGMS weber 158.9bhp, BMW MC Tomcat seatssigpic

Never even thought of Monarch. Maybe something to consider in the near future.

A/B best gearbox is the ZF4HP22 as fitted to jaguar xj6 up to 92ish, the one with a kickdown cable and not the EH version unless you are into electronics.
            C) Range rover bellhousing for your RV8 you will also need the drive plate complete with spacer, torque converter.
            D) you will have to measure up once the gearbox is fitted.
            E) standard or BMW it's up to you, or do you mean what ratio?

R/Rover gearboxs seem to be a lot more plentyfull than Jags at the moment, but there is a lot of work required to make the rover gearbox fit. You will also need to think about the speedo drive it is possible to fit this within the gearbox rear housing ( not an easy job!!!)

            Les.

Would it just solely Jaguar ZF4HP22 sourced boxes, or would the aforementioned BMW ZF4HP22 gearbox (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...m=250850646178) still be suitable to replace a BW35 on a TV8 engine (ie. without any extra work) ?

Apart from differing fitment concerns, do the ratios vary between original application - despite the same gearbox model no ?

Yes the gearbox in the link is the same as the jag box in that it has a kickdown controlled by cable. The box in the link is from a 325i BM so the torque converter should be not too bad, the smaller engined BM's converters would possibly give the wrong stall speed for the stag engine. I think the rear castings are differant to the jag and the output flange is differant but I think that you can fit a jag drive flange ( jag drive flange are the same bolt pcd as the stag). Sorry I am unable to answer the question about the ratio's for 1/2/3 but 4 gear with a locked torque converter is 0.75:1.

                Les.

                  Guys,

I had a ZF4HP22 fitted by Clive Tate to my TV8 car. When I asked him where it came from, he advised that the gearboxes he uses could be from almost any car originally fitted with the ZF4HP22. These could certainly be Jaguar or BMW but he wasn't at all concerned. He just buys gearboxes and has them reconditioned as part of his package.

                  Regards

                  Peter

All sounds rather complicated.. turning the Torque converter (from the list sent sounds rather awkward too) It must be easier and more economical to go with a Rover manual box or stick with the BW35 and suck it and see. If it (BW35) works all well and good else change it out for the LT77 manual box

There is no work required to the torque converter as you are fitting it too a ROVER engine and not a triumph engine.

Could be a lot cheaper to fit a manual box.
                      Les.

Thanks for that Les. I can cope with most things on the lathe at work but I read some instructions on how to do it and I feared the health and safety brigade would be right on to me.

I still think the manual box is the easiest but they are getting more expensive as they become harder to get too. Anyway I have more info for the pot so thanks again to all!

If you do go with a BMW box you will need to change the output flange to a jag or Sherpa or similiar UK one as the BMW flange has a different PDC for the bolt holes. The output shaft on both is the same, its only the flange that is different. - Alan

A big thanks for all the info, I've gone for that BMW box as it seemed a good buy.

I've already got the BW35 bell housing, just (!) need to assemble the other bits for a winter conversion project - apart from the professional converters themselves, does anybody else make up the adaptor plates or is this just modified from an existing adaptor ?

If I finally plump for the 4 speed auto route, then I might be selling all the complete manual conversion bits I've accumulated - this was my original intention a few years ago but I've sorta grown to like the relaxed nature of Stag cruising with an auto box and rather liking the idea of a more modern box and the extra ratio

                            cheers again
