    Gap in the Door

    Hi

Have just noticed a gap between the window frame and the rear of the door on both sides:P1000803.jpg

Is this a "feature" or should there be something there to weather-proof the door?

    That is how mine is.

The doors aren't watertight, that is why there is drain holes at the bottom and a plastic sheet between the door and the inner trim.

Was there not some kind or rubber bung/grommet on the earlier cars that fitted into the slot?

        Dave.

yep there should be a rubber wedge in there, i have them on both doors, bit crap to be honest, so i filled all round mine with sealer, i also found that there is nothing stopping the water getting into the whole of the top of the door frame, so it is now sealed water tight, it gets in between the window frame and door. i have stripped both my doors, frame out, derust, painted and waxed. new plastic on the door and the doorcard too, then run the sealer round the top outside edge, ends. new window rubbers, and seal under the chrome window trim too.

            i carved one of these

            Plastic_eraser_AL_20.jpg

into a nice wedge, sprayed it hammerite black and glued it into the gap

I had one of the original rubber wedges to work from but it was not tricky

Modern cars are exactly the same. If you wind your window down when it is wet, the seal at the top of the door never clears all of the water and a lot of it is still there when you wind it up again. - the same on the inside for condensation. The water has to go somewhere so they put drainage holes in the bottom.

My mum had a problem with her car - a newish fiesta, in that she could hear sloshing noises. It turned out that the drain holes in the bottom of the door were blocked with mud and it just filled up with water!!!

Fill it with black silicon, looks like it is supposed to be there.

Yeah, I also used black silicone, after a couple of weeks it looks like rubber.

                              Hi Mike

Perhaps "hole" is not the best word. Where the chrome window frame goes into the top of the door, the channel in which it sits is longer than the front to back size of the the frame. Consequently, there is quite a large gap between the the back vertical of the frame and the end of the channel towards the rear of the door.

                              Hope that helps
