I tried all sorts of stuff but eventually sourced a sealed bearing from a local bearing specialist rather than Stag part supplier. That one has been in now since 2008 and is fine....

Easy to get rear wheel running off the road though admittedly a little un-nerving. Chock the front wheels and provided you don't have a broken diff or LSD fitted you should be able to jack up one rear corner and run just that wheel, don't go mad on the throttle or try get 200mph out of it etc etc 1st gear, clutch engaged, no throttle was enough for me to replicate the horrible noise. having a responsible adult sitting in the driver seat to look after the brake pedal helps. I compared the noise with the other wheel off the ground and if the same it is likely to be inside the diff or nose.

With the diff off the car you will very quickly diagnose a shot nose bearing it will feel very rough and wobbly.

Make sure that the front diff oil seal is not dead and washing diff oil forwards and through the sealed diff nose bearing, they don't like this but it does hold rust in rear floor pan at bay
I checked through my records last night. It seems that, of the three main suppliers I bought the cheapest Quill shaft bearing so that is a distinct possibility. JP's £9.95 RB's £115 approx, and LD's £35. I was just about to order the LD one to 'keep in stock' or use if needed. (I want a head start to look at it at the week end if that is what it is.). Sadly the LD part one is out of stock. Does anyone have a recommendation for a bullet proof bearing?

      Cheers

        Hi Dave,

I have no idea if the 2000 range has the same quill shaft bearing but I put a new one on my 2.5PI from Chris Witor in 2006 and it is still fine. The diff nose extension looks the same...someone with more knowledge than me will be able to advise!

          Hi,

false alarm on the quill shaft front. Russ thinks it is the O/S UJ's in the half shaft, which wouldn't surprise me as they are the only two I haven't changed and I know they are stiff. Not a job I really want though!!

Russ - I think I upset 'Sheila' she didn't say a word to me on the way home.

Dave, you got back on line quick! only a few minutes before I was indoors but I did go the long way to give it some beans. The car that is, not an inflation aid.

              Hi Graham,

I was only there for a diagnosis, so I probably spent more time there before you left! Typically Russ found a few extra things wrong that I hadn't noticed, on top of the speedo packing up just before I got there. Sods law - the MOT expires on Tuesday as well! Nice to see the TVR at last. What model is it? I am having a Car conversation on Skype at the moment!!!

              Cheers

Hi Dave, better to find out about problems before they break!

The car is a Chimaera 400. The baby of the range but still surprisingly quick.. It has been up-rated on the brakes and suspension and never fails to make me smile. It should be better on the power (240 BHP and 260 lb torque a few months ago) now it is running on 8 cylinders all the time. I am thinking about big valve heads and a roll-bar but also possibly changing.

There is one that looks identical to mine but has a supercharged 4.6 with 360 BHP at the wheels!!! I looked at one like this before and bottled it - a bit intimidating and I didnt like the colour. Time will tell, but I so love these cars. They compliment the relaxed nature of the Stag very well.
