    Fuel seepage

Since I replaced the original fuel pump with the QH equivalent, I have been getting fuel seepage from the outlet. I have tried 3 new sets of fibre washers and even fitted a new banjo and bolt but still the fuel seeps around the washers. It is not enough to cause drips but if you run your finger round the connection, you can see the dampness. I have tightened the bolt without going to the extreme.

Are there any suitable sealants that can be applied?

Hi Simon, When I were a lad I got a split in a Morris J2 fuel tank. We were travelling between Nairobi & Mombasa at the time. The temporary repair carried out at a local garage was to cover it with soap. Try it you will be surprised.

Hi Simon, these pumps can be difficult to seal, but if you re-assemble using PTFE tape that does it, and yes, it is petrol proof. Martin.

Thanks Martin. Do you just wrap a layer round the thread? I seem to remember from years ago that possibly red hermetite might also be suitable.

Peter, thanks but I think I need a permanent solution.

          Simon.

You can get "Dowty" washers, which are metal washers but with a inner rubber seal. I do not know any suppliers local to you but I would try industrial hydraulic suppliers to start with.

Thanks John. There seem to be a good range on fleabay. Can you remind me what size the banjo bolts are?

Hi, wrap about 5 layers round the threads, be careful not to overlap the thread end or it'll fold across the opening. Martin.

                Sorry Simon.

I havent a clue but when you get some please let me know as I need some!!

p.s. I have just found some spare washers which are 16.5mm internal diameter. I have ordered some M16 dowtys and will let you know.

When I have had similar problems on SU carbs the simple cure has either to nip the nut up a little bit at a time (over a few days) until the seepage stops or use fine wet and dry and a very flat surface to ensure all the metal services are perfectly flat.

Some people prefer alloy washers rather than fibre on carbs, I assume the same would apply to a fuel pump so that may be worth a try. Burlen should stock different types of washers.

John, I am going to give 5/8" washers a try as I think this may be the size.

5/8 are 15.875mm so its going to be close.

The washers must ! be the correct size. I bought a set and they wouldnt fit . I had to file them down a little . I used red stag jointing compound . That did the trick.

As my Stag is saffron, not sure if this would be OK - sorry, bad joke!! Seriously, I am going to try hermetite as well which I think is a similar product.

I think they are 3/8 BSP.

I seem to have stopped the petrol seeping from the pump outlet by putting a 5/8" dowty washer on the pump side of the banjo and, because the dowty washer would not fit in the inset on the outer side of the banjo, used the normal fibre washer with some red hermetite. Job done, onto the next!!
