Engine cuts out whilst driving

Whilst driving my Dad's Stag back from the Isle of Man this week, the engine cut out on three occasions. It will do it whilst driving merrily along but as soon as you turn the key again it restarts immediately.

Bar a dodgy connection on the ignition system, does anyone know what could cause it? It is running points & running exceedingly well when it is going.

If only it would break down properly then I could get a better idea

I would clean the points on the fuel pump,check the fuel filter and replace if full of crud.

fuel pump for me. when I checked out the end cap it was full of carbon from the points, tbh it was lunch and although it had been on the car for a decade it had only covered 12k ish miles. Pretty crap really. Solid state jobby is fitted now.

It could be the fuel pump Inertia switch is dirty,I would try cleaning that as well as the pump contacts.

Mine did the same, but dozens of times. Turned out to be the luminition. I think the connections from the distributor to the heat sink. Changed it and it was fine.

Update:

I re-cut the point surfaces in the pump as there was a fair bit of wear on them. Since then the car has done about a 100 miles & hasn't stopped once. Hopefully that is it cured.

Keep a spare pump in the boot, you will need it.

Yep, I think I'll get an electronic pump for mine, though I'll be checking first to see if I get at least +12V at the pump!
