    T/Arm bush fitting problems

I have just started to reassemble my trailing arms to subframes with new Superflex polybushes and new rear bolt kit from J Paddocks. I have pressed the bushes in OK, but the s/steel inserts are proving to be a major problem. While I have pressed them in OK, I am struggling to fit the new bolts inside - the s/steel inserts seem to have too small an interior diameter. Has anyone else had encountered this before and if so, what was the solution?

I must admit on the rebuild I am getting a little dis-heartened with the quality of fit of new parts. I have only done a few bits as the car is still basically a shell, but:
    • The rear boot seal makes the boot sit too high
    • I ordered new carb elbows and thought the set sold was a "car set of 3", but I actually need 4
    • The latest order from a different supplier had the wrong studs for the trailing arm, some bolts were too large and now this
Are all the supposed poplular supplier's parts not quite right?

    Hi Nigey,

I think all of the boot seals available at the moment make the boot sit high, so it wouldn't matter what main supplier they came from - unless anyone else as found something better.

Confused about the carb elbows - the Stag only has two - from the air filter box to the carbs.

No reason why the trailing arm studs should be wrong. I would imagine this is just a mistake my the supplier.

Regarding the trailing arm bolts, I can only suggest that you use a verneer caliper and find out if it is the bolts or the sleeves that are wrong. There really shouldn't be a reason why they don't fit.

I have tried both the original bolts and the new ones. The new are a thou or 2 wider, but I assume this should be within tolerance, but neither bolt fit inside the sleeve in the polybush. I will measure the inside diameter of the sleeve / insert tomorrow though

I fitted poly bushings to my car and did not have a problem I did tap out the brackets that are fitted to the arms just enough to get the arm fitted then same with the bolt I fitted new grade 8 bolts and had to cut them to lenght. I used a drift to line up the holes but it was a fairly easy job.

        cheers Stuart

I had no problems with the Polybushes and their tubes on my Stag, but............

on my other classic the polybushes for one of the fitments were indeed supplied with tubes with the wrong inside diameter, so it does happen. Best measure first as described above.
          The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137
