Sods Law strikes again

Lovely day, not in work till tonight, Off to Blackpool on friday with the whole family to visit friends so thought best fill up with petrol and while I'm at it take the hood down and enjoy the sun.....

There was an odd smelll as I got to the end of my road, then I found the steering very heavy, then smoke pouring out from the bonnet !

Well sods law has struck, the high pressure hose on the power steering gave way and emptied the oil all over my nicely heat wrapped manifolds. I was a little worried at first but no fire seemed imminent so drove home with very heavy steering.

Now theres no way I will be up and running for friday, I have a spare but its as old as the one that just burst so would rather buy new and that will not be here in time to be fitted ready for early Fridaybut I have a question, I may aswell change the rubber hose on the low pressure side, can I use normal water hose for this ? I will be getting a new replacement for the HP side obviously.

anyone used normal 3.8 bar on the low side ?

Have you called Tony Hart, as he may be able to get one over for you tomorrow.

I will soon have to do mine as one is weeping, I think they perish and crack when you move the steering pump.

I need to replace mine but your experience has got me thinking, do I really want a rubber pipe that is unused but may beover 30 years old!

Just around the corner from where I work is a place that make up hydraulic hoses for all types of machinery (Parker Fittings). If I take in the fittings they can make it up on the spot.

I had one go last week too, H.P. what a mess. when you refill the pot with fluid it takes about 2ltrs and it will make a high screeching noise as the fluid circulates until more fluid is added. Recommend everybody to check theirs as these pipes are at least 30 years old and often forgotten. I must have disturbed mine when working on it recently.

You've got me thinking now what do you reckon do these pipes look OK as the bottom one has some cracking on it?:?

What about replacing with braided stainless Steel ones, has anyone done this and where did they get them from?

That HP one looks like mine did and like the spare I am about to throw away, trust me it makes a hell of a mess when it blows ! as I am sure Bob can vouch for.

its only £24 for a new replacement and no cleaning up to do !

Well I actually did get a replacement part from James Paddock first thing the next day which is fantastic service, unfortunately the part wouldn't fit my RV8 with Monarch Manifolds as I had to do alot of adapting in the first place.

So I took the idea of Alans and rang Pirtek who are just 20 miles away, took my old one along and got them to make me up a longer hose and heres the result:

I was also lucky to have a roll of exhaust wrap in my garage still and managed to get the car up and running and ready for Friday's trip up to Blackpool (260 miles)

It rained and hailed all the way there but I was smiling all the way, I love that car !
