    Alternator fixing

    Hi all

I had a screeching fan belt a few days ago, and when I took a look, I realised the nyloc nut had come off the top bolt on the alternator. The bolt had partially withdrawn about two inches and the alternator was free to pivot on the remaining bracket. hence the screech. In looking to put it back together, I notice that the distance between the brackets on the alternator is 3.5 inches, but the gap on the block where it attaches is only 3 and 1/16. Is this right? Should the gap be filled up with washers?

    Thanks

    Gord

The back mounting hole at the top should have what looks like a sleeve running through the hole.
This has a split down one side, so it will slide through the hole to accomodate a variable distance as you tighten the bolt.
Since the pic is from a dead alternator I have just removed from my car, I can send you this sleeve if you'd like?
Or will be at National day and you can come and pick it up?

My nut came off the back of the long bolt too, causing a funny rattling noise. I had strippd down all the front end (Fan, Rad, Pipes etc) before I found it.

Now have a shiny new Nyloc nut on there.

Hi 4x4 (no Name?) Thanks for this. Mm, means I may still have a problem with my back hole (forgive the expression). I think my sleeve has almost come out of the hole on the nut side, and while I have now put a nyloc nut on the bolt, I don't think the sleeve has pushed all the way through the hole to take up the gap. I'll need to take another look methinks.

Can't actually get the alternator off at the moment as one of the bolts on the adjusting bracket is really solid. Don't want to force it until the summer driving is over in case it snaps off, making it a bigger job.

Thanks for the post, at least now I understand what is meant to happen. I think it'll be OK for the few months of brilliant that we have left. After that, there's s few jobs to get done.

          Cheers

If you had mentioned it we could have looked at it on Sunday in between putting up and taking down the gazibo Rupery could have used hi slump hammer Apply some penetrating oil a few times over a week to that the bolt on the bracket and it will soon come off.

            Cheers

Thanks, Bruce, didn't even think of it on Sunday. It's a background issue at the moment, so I wasn't in any great rush. Anyway too busy enjoying the sunshine at the time (I wish)!

                Sorry Gord - I'm Adrian.
4x4 refers to my Stag (the manual one of the two).
I'm guessing your sleeve has been pushed out backwards by the thing moving around once the nut dropped off.
A bit of a tighten up all round should shove it back where it belongs...............

                    Hi Adrian,

Welcome to the Forum. You will no doubt have a few experiences us mere 2WD Stag owners haven't. Was that yours at the Worcester National Day a few years ago? The Jensen FF with more class

Yup - definitely have had some experiences you haven't.
Not all of them good I should add - like having a one off crownwheel and pinion made??

Can't remember doing National Day at Worcester - but I may well be wrong.
There again, it spent a little time with Clive Tate - maybe he took it up there
We have just done Monaco via the Alps though!!
Nothing, but nothing would make that car lose it's composure (unless you count hairpin bends that were too tight for me to get around without making it into a three point turn) no matter how big a bootful I gave it.
I thought I knew this car well - but my respect for it's abilities grew hugely on that trip.

Will be in Norfolk this weekend if anyone wants to come and say hello!

Is this yours, or 'the other one'?:

                          Hi Dave.

That's Adrian's. I think the auto is owned by Lewis of Tate and Lewis.

Not knowing it was a 4x4, I thought the bonnet bulge was to hide a Rover lump. Adrian explained the the Stag engine had to be raised to accommodate the front transmission. Fascinating to talk with him.

P.s. Judging by that photo you could have a career with the paparazzi!!!!
