    Hi Raoul

Cant help on the routine servicing for these but I am interested in how you get on with the conversion and any responses you get via the forum. Ive had a couple of suitable drive-shafts from a Datsun 140B sat in my garage along with a pair of dismantled Stag hubs for a couple of years and need to get the Stag hubs reamed out to take the Datsun UJs. I understand that you can get UJs with different sized caps in Aus to allow the fitting of the drive-shafts without having to machine the Stag hubs, is this the approach your taking?

There is some info on the machineing required on the Triumphstag.net website if your going down that route.

    Cheers

      G'day Dave,

I'm not too sure if I'm going to use the hybrid UJs or get my hubs machined.

One of the half shafts on my car has staked UJs so I have bought a couple ofhalfshafts from a specialist Triumph 2500 pi breaker. (His price for Stag half shafts $250 ea, for 2500 pi $100 the pair!) Exactly the same part!

I'm going to do some reasearch regarding machining costs, to retain the triumph UJs, I know the hybrid "Tridat" ones are $80 each. I'll let you know what I decide to do.

      regards,

      Raoul

        Hi Dave,

I have decided to go with the "Tridat" UJs, I spoke to Greg at Greg Tunstall Mechanical in Brisbane over the weekend and he advised me to use the hybrid UJs rather than getting the machining done.

I also discovered that BP L21-M grease is used in the datsun half shafts. I pulled mine apart today and removed all the old grease and paint.

They are relatively easy to dismantle, some big circlips hold them together. Just make a note of the order of theplastic spacers and ball bearings!

If you want the UJs I could bring them with me when I come to the UK in Septemberto save postage costs for you. PM me if your interested.

        regards,

        Raoul

          Hi Raoul

Thanks for the offer but I think Im gonna go down the machining route as I have already bought the Datsun UJs and a set of spare Stag hubs. If I have problems and change my mind I will be in touch, strange that no one does the hybird UJs in the UK.

I see from another thread on the forum that you have completed the installation of your Datsun shafts, what do you think to them?

          Thanks again

            G'day Dave,

Can't tell you how they feel on the road yet as the car is still up on ramps! I'll posta piccy of the installation and ofa hybrid UJ when I get a spare ten minutes. The shafts look like theyare originalfit!

I'll let you know how they feel on the road as soon as I get an oportunity to give them a thorough work out!

            regards,

            Raoul

              Hi Dave,

Got to test the half shafts today, the overdrive decided to play up but I managed to give them a bit of a work out!

I used to think that my Triumph half shafts were pretty good, only the occasional nudge when accelerating and changing gear after a corner.

However the Datsun half shafts have really made a noticable difference, their response is faster, the whole rear endseems a lot more "sure footed" and there is no twitch at all.

When I put poly bushes in the rear a couple of years ago, there was a vast improvement but this mod really finishes it off. I would really recommend it, well worth it in my opinion. (Might take a second or twooff your time at Prescott!)

              regards,

              Raoul

                Hi Raoul

Spurred on by your comments on the improvements made by fitting the Datsun drive shafts I decided to get started on mine. Stripped the spare Stag hubs to find one has severally damaged thread which maymake itunserviceable.

The UJs I bought that are supposed to be for Datsun 140B shafts are in fact too small, had them too long to return them so now left in a quandary as to which way to go.

Due to one of my spare hubs being U/S and the UJs I have being the wrongsize Im now thinking that the hybrid route may be easier as I can fit those to my existing hubs without the need to modify them, just a little concerned as to whether the 140B shafts and the 240Zshafts utilise the same size UJ.

Do you have any idea of the cap diameter on the Datsun side of the hybrid UJs you have used?

What is the price of the hybrid UJs and when you visit the good old UK where abouts in the UK will you be visiting. Would probably need to buy a couple of extra UJs as spares should one fail in the future.

                Regards

                Dave

                  Hi Dave,

I can't give you the dia of the Datsun caps off the top of my head but I think they are given on the triumphstag.net forum or in the technical section of this site?

If you can't find it drop me a line and I'll get under the car and measure it for you.

The hybrids are AUD 90.00 ea which is approx GBP 45.00 at todays RoE.

I have a (much loved)sister who currently lives in Market Deeping, I usually spend a few days with her due to her proximity to Rimmers. (Returning my purchases that haven't passed my quality control). If my geography serves me correctly that's reasonably close to Lincoln?

if I don't get there, they weigh around 4kg I could post them from my parents at Hayling Island if you're still interested.

                  regards,

                  Raoul

                    Hi Raoul

Thanks for the prompt reply, Mkt Deeping isnt far away in fact Im often there with work.

I will see if I can find the UJ info on Triumphstag.net or this site, the bore size where the UJs fit is only slightly larger on the 140B driveshaftsthan the Staghence I can understand why people tend to ream the Stag hubs out. Dont want to buy the hybrids to find they wont fit the Datsun shafts I have.

                          Hi Dave,

The dia of the Datsun cap on the Tridat UJ is 27.9 mm. Hope this helps.

                          regards,
