    Hi All,

does anyone know if you can still buy black vinyl roof kits, or any one that fits them locally to Northampton?

I covered my stag hardtop myself Vinyl was about £30 from a supplier in Devon. It needed a couple of seams machined (thanks mum) but the shape was very simple only real problem was getting the air bubbles out of the top section and it neatly solved the problem of having a red car with a purple hardtop.

        hi

covered my hard top a few years a go, got two metre,s of stretch vinyl and some realy good spray adhesive from Woolies ( Market deeping) i was pleasently suprised how well it went on the only tricky bit was the corners at the back, cost about £50 all in and took a few hours, well worth the time and effort.

        regards steve

I also found this article whilst browsing through Google:

            Heregoes;

Taken from an article in Manta Magic (the OMOC mag) by Ben Williamson

"I spent the best part of a day phoning all sorts of bearded-folk inthe back of Practical Classics before finding someone who would make me onefrom scratch. Just my luck he happened to be in the next village!

            Bruce Moore (Trimmer)
            01673 857289

Bruce is based at Holton-cum-Beckering which is situated between Lincoln andMarket Rasen (Lincs).

He sourced the vinyl from Woolies in Yorkshire and cut it to shape on theactual car before stitching it. Total cost including glue was about
            120. He will also fit the roof ifyou want him to and carries out full re-trims on just about anything.

A couple of things I learned from him:

The correct type of vinyl is called topping vinyl, this has the correctraised grain in it. The roof I had bought via Practical Classics 10 years agowas made out of inferior quality interior trimming vinyl (you live and learn).

Always use brushable glue that will withstand high temperatures. Apparently ifyou use the aerosol type the glue can melt in the sun (or bodyshop oven) andruin the roof."

I know this may be a fair way to travel, but he sounds like he really knowswhat he is doing, which, in my book makes it worthwhile.

Also, Ben spent an age trying to find somewhere, so you don't have to! And arecommendation from Ben is a good enough case for me to use them. (He reallydoes like his cars at their best!)

I hope that extract from the 'Retro Car Club Forum' and 'Manta Magic'is of some help,
            Duncan, Skye

Why would you want to cover your hard top in vinyl?

I have seen some hard tops with Vinyl and to be honest they look pretty neat. However I would think you'ld have to be pretty sure that there was no rust as this would defeat the purpose if you had to rip it all off in a couple of years??

I have a bit of a soft-spot for vinyl roofs, but not seen one in the flesh on a Stag though. I have a pretty much first-class hardtop but it is a different colour to the car. Covering it with vinyl would be less expensive than a repaint although, as it's in such good condition, I would be reluctant to do so.
