Hindhead Tunnel now open

This afternoon the long awaited tunnel under the devils Punchbowl in Hindhead, Surrey opened - this vid courtesy of my daughter whilst I did the driving.

Just the one direction at present, with the other opening Friday. Of course with us being British, a long section of the dual carriageway leading to it was coned off to a single lane - for no obvious reason - and traffic tailed back somewhat!

Looking forward to Sunday's run out when the Surrey Group will be driving through - both directions I hope!

On the traditional day of rest, I believe this tunnel is going to be a very noisy place before the sun gets too high in the sky. Given the publicity and anticipation this tunnel has had, i suspect there will be lots of boys playing with their toys over the weekend, as well as the 20+ TVR's planning some fun Average speed NSL. I would expect that to be reduced over time....

For all you spotters out there.
I was involved with some of the testing of the radio comms systems in the tunnel for the emergency services. The exercise that was run to test all of the emergency services response was "Exercise Stag"!!
bit of useless information.

A few of us did a run around the Surrey lanes today and that included a trip through the tunnel. So here it is taken from a more suitable vehicle, although wind / tyre noise in this particular tunnel seems to drown out the engine.

My daughter is at Chichester Uni, and I used the tunnel for the first time yesterday.
It's great, and knocks at least 15 minutes off the journey each way. More if the traffic was bad around the punchbowl.
Typical though, there was an accident at the Wooden Bridge which took - yes you've guessed - an extra 15 mins!

(I also noticed that the radio keeps going through the tunnel.....)
