    HELP! I've damaged my chopper.

    Hi,
I got delivery of an UltraSpark, electronic ignition module today, this was meant to be a spare part for when we go touring in the stag. Unfortunately it does not work well, the car runs really roughly as if the timing is out.

The car was running great on the lumination system that was fitted but while I was removing it, to trial the UltraSpark, I broke off one of the lugs on the chopper. I have glued it using Araldite - presently waiting for it to harden.

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement chopper or does anyone here have a spare for sale.

I phoned UltraSpark to check my setup, they have asked me to send a photo of it, however speaking to my friend GrahamR (white stag) he says he had the same problem with one from the same manufacturer.

    Thanks for any help.

I did a similar thing one Saturday afternoon, after i'd cooled down as we needed the car on the Sunday the brain kicked in and I used the plastic top of an aerosol can cut a hole out and superglued it underneath, then cut out the lugs.............It ran like that for several weeks until we got a replacement, I now keep it as a spare.

        Pete/Roger,

        Great! Thanks for the advice.

The araldite rapid seems to be working, hope it can withstand the heat.

          HI Danny,

Did you check the timing with the ultraspark fitted? I know several people had to reset the timing when fitting the pertronix/aldon igniter modules as it had put the timing well out.

          kind regards
          Ian

I would have thought that it was necessary to check/reset the static timing when fitting a different elec ignition system.

              Ian/Chris,

No I did'nt check the timing, I kind of assumed that because the car was running fine the timing was ok with the Lumination set up. Thanks for the advice as it certainly felt like the timing was out by quite a few degees. I'll maybe get the timing light out!

              Cheers
              Danny

What made you want to trial the UltraSpark? If you do go down that route, I bagsy your Lumenition light sensor unit!

Trialing the UltraSpark was to make sure it worked as I wanted a back up when I went touring. I bought the car with the electronic igniion fited so don't have the luxory of having the double points back up. - Sorry it's not up for grabs!!

                  Cheers Danny

Let us know how you get on re-setting the timing and how you figure doing that on tour using it as a spare!

                      John,

I have had some feedback from Ignitionland so with the information given I will refit the unit and see how it goes. I am really reluctant to reset the ignition. I could always carry a timing light with me - my wife would have to leave one of her many pairs of shoes at home though.

I think it is likely that you need to reset the timing - when I changed from a old Newtron system to lumenition the timing was so far out I had to move the distibutor I tooth to get enough adjustment to get the timing back right!

When I fitted my Pertronix the timing was about 12 degrees out. That's where my money would be.

I replaced my twin points with the Cray Bell (Ultraspark) including base plate earlier this year. The timing was only a couple of degrees out. Works spot on and the tacho no longer dances all over the place on tickover. The only problem I had was that the holes in the base plate didn't quite line up with the mounting holes in the dist body and I had to elongate one hole to fit. Excellent for the price.
