Gear box tunnel bracket and captive nuts

I've been cleaning up my cars gearbox tunnel prior to refitting the gear box tomorrow following a clutch change and noticed a bracket spot welded to top of the tunnel. The brackethas 2 nuts welded to it.

I've checked the parts catalogue, to the best of my knowledgethe bracket is p/n 714659 on page 05-68.

The bracketis approx 5 inches forward of the nuts that are used to secure the centre console to the tunnel.

My question is what is this bracket for? Thecaptive nuts are currently unused on my manual J type O/D car.

    Thanks and regards,

    Raoul

    Hello Raoul

Mine should be up on some ramps this weekend.... if no bobody has identified the bracket by then I will have a good look and let you know.

Personally I think you're just finding excuses to show us how gleaming your underside is!!

Is that not where the wooden surround around the gearstick screws down into? They must be around there somewhere. At work at the mo so can't look at ROM!

          Hello Raoul

Just looked at your mystery bracket on my car (1976 manual) and the bracket is there but its doesn't seem to have anything contected to it or be doing anything useful.

I haven't looked underneath but my car seems to have a panel bolted to this bracket that supports the dashboard to the transmission tunnel.

It sits just behind the heater controls / radio fascia and you can see the two bolts if you remove the ashtray.

              G'day Pete,

I have removed the ashtray and checked my car. I have no dashboard bracket or bolts.

Is your car auto or does it have aircon?

((I'd be surprised about the aircon option , having been bought (dragged)up in "Deep South Bedfordshire" myself!))

              regards,

              Raoul

                Hi Raoul,

Sadly you're right about the aircon. The car was originally auto but I can't see that it makes a difference.

Not easy to take a decent pic but you can see the right hand bolt and part of the frame, the top of which bolts to the undersidedashboard if I remember correctly.

Maybe it's only fitted to earlier cars?

                Pete

                  Hi Pete,

                  Is yours a MkI?

I looked at the Parts catalogue and the bracket appears to be fitted to cars up to 10,000. I've still got two holes I want to plug though. Any idea what size bolt and thread it is?

                  regards,

                  Raoul

Good timing as I was pondering this only last night, refitting and locating my dashboard after replacing heater, the manual talks about a support bracket behind the radio panel but I don't have one (very late Mk2) and the dash just sits on the front console although there are holes in dash and floor. Spoke to my mate this morning and he doesn't have one either so must be very early models only.
