    Stag crashed on A127

Hope it wasn't anyone on here. The pic is a bit rubbish cos one of the lads that works for us messaged it to me on his blackberry. He said he didn't think anyone had been hurt but the car had wiped out some of the lights and was badly damaged at the front.

I live in Wickford Ian and know of a Yellow one in Wickford, London Road - usually garaged, so not sure if it's that!

The only other one I know of belonged to Les - who was the publican at The Old Windmill, South Hanningfield and then the The Wheatsheaf in Rettendon!

I haven't seen him for over a year now, so he may have sold it!

On the day of the crash I sold my Mimosa yellow Stag with a black vinyl hardtop reg number HVY 85N. The new buyer picked it up from me in Cranham at around 7.30pm and was heading for Harwich which would mean going down the A127 to pick up the A12. I had a text message from a friend telling me about the crash and wondering if it was mine. The pieces seemed to fit; right place, right time, but the new owner hasn't contacted me. This I find a bit strange as he apparently claimed in the local press that the cause was brake failure. If I'd just bought a car and that happened on the way home I'd be straight back to the seller, wouldn't you? I then found this article and the attached picture and although the picture is a bit blurred it looks like it confirms my worst fears and my lovely Stag is no more. Absolutely gutted even if it wasn't still mine!

Phil - i'd be thankful that he didn't smash it up during the test drive!

Phil, was the new owner used to old classics? Reason for the question is that old cars don't brake like new ones do they and it may have caught the new owner out? Like you say, if i'd bought a classic and the brakes failed i would be intouch!

Hi Phil. I do feel for you.
He clearly knows its not your fault as you had a test drive and he had been driving it beforehand, so don't worry there. No-one was hurt, just memories.
Presume it wasn't an auto and he hit the wrong pedal, the accelerator rather than the brake maybe?

                  Hi Phil,

Really sorry to hear that even if you had sold it.

Your name rings a bell. I think maybe you have used our company for a PC repair at some point? If so I didn't know you had a Stag.

                  Kind regards
                  Ian (also in Cranham)

Sorry to see what happened Phil, what a waste! On the plus side you have the funds to replace the stag.Looks to me as if thats approached the roundabout to fast, possibly 3rd gear if manual and over shot the bend at the roundabout,By the way just out of curiosity was it fitted with a rover v8 or not? Heaven forbid it aint a forum user and not a stranger.

The Stag pedals are skewed to the right, the clutch pedal (was it a manual?) is in the same place as the brake pedal in all modern cars - in line with the steering column. He could have hit the clutch pedal instead of the brake.

Terrible bad luck for the new owner whatever caused it.

I was thinking along the same lines Dave that may be he wasn't used to and auto but that usualy ends in hitting the brake thinking it is the clutch resulting in an emergency stop.

                          Cheers Steve

Hello Graham, If i were to smash the stag i would repair it at the bodyshop in which i work, car hits the streets about twice a year so very unlikely to suffer damage,it was subject to a complete respray only two weeks ago, looking very nice in 2K solid BRG. Car is road legal mot,d and tax free (aug 72).I do live on a council estate and do not mind being refered to as a chav.I like the user name as i own the only classic car and stag on the estate.
