How can I repair a rip in the soft top?

    Hello All

This is my first posting. I have been the owner of a 1971 auto stag for the past two years and joined the SOC at the same time. However, it was only whilst reading the latest club mag that I discovered there was this internet forum. Doh!

Anyway, the reason for my posting is that my car has two rips in the sides of the soft top where at some point in its life it has become snagged in the mechanism duirng folding. Each rip is about 2 inches long.

I intend on fitting a new soft top and refurbed frame when finances permit but that won't be until next winter. In the meantime I am looking to attempt a repair to try and keep out the showers. Has anyone got any good tips for me?

    Regards

    Bruce

    Hello Bruce

Congrats on your first posting ...warning.... it WILL become addictive.

Heard about this product from Halfrauds a couple of weeks ago but have not heard any reports regarding its suitability. It may be designed for plastic hoods but worth going in and asking.

      Hi Bruce

The club accessory use to sell round cloth badges Black with the leaping stag on and if you were to put these over the rips on both sides they would not look out of place

Have to check on size but from memory these should do the trick

      Regards

Thats anACE idea! I have checked the SOC shop and they are 2.5 inches diameter which will just cover the largest rip of 2 inches. At a cost of ÂŁ2.20 each plus some superglue and a needle and thread that is a hopefully a cheap way of fixing my problem.

Greenstag, thanks for your suggestion as well.

The archive facility on this forum is very helpful. My car currently does not have an inertia switch fitted. I purchased a second hand unit with the intention of fitting it today. Upon opening it up to clean it I could not undestand how it was supposed to work. Quick search on this forum and hey presto I finda photo of the inerds of a switch. Guess what, mine has two crucial bits missing which explains why I was confused! Thanks guys.

        Regards

        Bruce

What a good idea I to have a small nick in the hood , the hood is only a year old so didn’t want to buy another so I repaired it by sowing a patch on the inside of the hood but the hole was still visible .I have just ordered two badges and will sow these over the hole. Thanks again for the idea

              Hi Bruce

You could try a tent repair kit from a camping shop to fix to the inside

I always used adhesive when patching, stitching always brings the opportunity to introduce leaking holes - can you seal them effectively ?

                cheers.....Andy

never used the car in the wet and never will hopefully so not really an issue but will probably take your advice and glue the badge in place

I try to avoid using the car in the wet but lets face it, in this country the weather is so unpredictable that you will get caught sooner or later. If you go away for the weekend in the UK you will be very lucky not to get at least one shower!

A car will soon dry out after a shower if there is a slight breeze or some sunshine. Putting a damp car away in the garage is worse than leaving it outside to blow dry.

Welcome, Bruce. Hope you don't get too addicted. Some of the posts on here are made very late at night, and I am worried that some members are neglecting the other woman in their life

Stag motif badges glued into position over the holes this evening using some trimmers adhesive which one of my neighbours had from Bentley. If its good enough for them its good enough for me!

                        Cheers
