    Wiring?

Whilst out making lots of noise this morning, I discovered that my indicators had stopped working. Also thanks and appologies to you, if you were in the blue car behind me, you made me realise that I had the problem despite you being fairly rude to me .

It appears to be the flasher unit which, was a surprise because I changed this recently because of slow/no flash rate on the old one. However, when trying the hazzards, which work fine, when I switch them on and off, the rev counter needle blips to about 500 revs (engine off but ignition on) Is that normal or is there some form of a short?

Also, the rheostat, seems to work in a fairly even way but switches of the dash lights completely when fully anti-clockwise - is that normal?

Finally, the internal light switch, switches off the passenger door lamp when the internal lights are switched on and the drivers door is open - is that normal.

There is some optimism in the post but I cant help thinking that I have some leakage and/or crossed wires somewhere..

It doesn't do this on mine so I guess it's not normal! I'd suspect a poor earth

Yep. So you can turn the dash lights off

I'd start by checking the wiring of the interior light switch.

I'd also clean the connectors to the indicator bulbs and probably change the bulbs at the same time. Older bulbs have a higher resistance so give a slower flash. a couple of mine were almost black when I had a simliar slow flash problem.Plus I'd also check the earthing points at the front, rear and under the dash.

      Ho Nick,

thanks for responding - of all the points, the lights out in the dash was the one I was worried about most of all. Lights out equals more or less a complete short or close to, which is not what I wanted to have behind the dashboard!

I will check-out the earths etc as suggested.

Was that really a design feature, or just rubbish components? Even on full, you only get a warm glow from the dash anyway. I've followed the lead of someone else on this forum (can't recall who of the top of my head) and ebay'd £4 worth of LEDs and a bunch of MES bulbs.

Got the LEDs, but still waiting for the bulbs to have myself a smashing time one evening! I still find it quite staggering (sic.) that you can get 100 white LEDs and 200 resistors for £4.

I think it's a hangover from the parking lights option on the Mk1's. Means you could park up your Stag with the dash lights off and just the offside front sidelight and tail lights on.
