Ever wondered what the inside of the stag fuel tank looks like

Just cut open my old tank and as you can see they have a built in surge pot where the fuel pickup goes so even if your fuel light goes on and off when it sloosh's about you should still get no air in the system.

Naa just chucked a match in it first to clear it out.

Seriously thought, it has been in my shed for about 3 years and before that i washed it out with water so it was absolutly free of any trace of fuel.

so why would anyone do this i wonder????

unless of course they were beavering away on an efi project!!! and thinking of a submersible pump buried in the tank........

I chopped the top off my old tank after about a week or so after emptying it!

The remanufactured tanks don't have this surge pot. They are based on the early tanks that have no surge pot, and have a drain plug in the bottom.

Big cigar for the muffinman,That's right Dave,this tank was kicking up rust particles so I got a reproduction tank and it didn't have the internal cup so I got rid of it and found a good second hand one instead which is still on my car and could well be surplus to requirements once I have modified the old one.Cheers Steve

When you cut open your tank did you happen to note how close to the botton of the surge pot the suction line was and is the drain plug outside of the pot

Hi Dave ,i didn't have the suction pipe fitted as it was being used on the other tank but I can tell you it is 250mm from the neck of the pickup boss to the tank floor.As for the drain mine doesn't have one nor does its replacment I think it is only later or repro tanks that have them.i dont think it would be fitted in the pot but next to it in the recess stamped in the tank floor which you can see in this pic.

It would appear that the drain bung was on the drawing board but never fitted because there is a rubber blanking plug right underneath that "drain plug" boss(?) pressing (?)
My 30 year old tank still had a gallon of fuel in it because without suction you cant get it all out!

I think the early stags had the drain plug and it was withdrawn on later cars. Apparently the Repro tanks are based on this which - so I am told is also why they don't have the anti surge baffle you can see in steve's tank.
