how do you test a 6V dynamo? (not stag related)

Hi AllDo any of you have experience of testing a 6V dynamo? My brothers GMC352 artillery truck is struggling to start. Battery keeps going flat. It shows 6V so want to test the dyno.ThanksBruce

Testing is much the same as testing an alternator on the car; start engine, put on some heavy load (headlights etc) then rev up and make sure voltage goes up above 'normal' battery voltage (6v fully charged lead/acid is about 6.5v.).

Dynamos have an external control box; this has a cutout relay (no diodes!) and a regulator to control voltage (and sometimes current). Sometimes the cutouts dont pull in when charging so there is no charge into the battery, so contacts may need cleaning.
