Oil Dilution....Is it possible on a stag?

Having done a good bit to electrics lately which needed leaving the ignition switched on I noticed my pump keeps ticking.

I would expect an SU pump to stop when the carbs were full....

Looking under the bonnet I noticed the drivers side carb was leaking fuel via the spindle....then I looked at the dipstick and it seemed a bit
fuller than it should and I thought it smelled of petrol but that could be psycholigical.

Anynoe else had a stag dilute its oil with fuel? If the float valve sticks as they sometimes do I'd expect the fuel to come out of the overflow, not drop into the inlet manifold and hence the sum via an open valve.

I'll do an oil change as a precaution.....cheaper than a rebuild!

My fuel pump was doing the same recently on the way to France. It just kept on ticking although there were no leaks or overflowing anywhere. It eventually gave up the ghost completely a couple of hundred miles later and I had to change the pump on the hard shoulder in France.

I haven't stripped the pump to find the fault yet but the new pump solved the problem.

Could be that your fuel overflow pipe is blocked or kinked where it exits at the front of the engine! and is backing up.

How about disconnecting the fuel line before the carbs - say after the filter and then blocking the line from the pump by sticking something up it. Turn the ignition on. If the pump continues to tick, then it isn't the carbs taking fuel - more likely a leaky diaphragm in the pump itself. But if the ticking has stopped, the indication is that the fuel is being delivered to a float bowl past a sticky needle valve, or on account of a leaky float.

        Hope that helps,
        Duncan, Skye

          Thanks for the good advice...
Ive also seen on another thread that there is a better type of needle valve available from Moss just up the road from me.

I'll give that a try....annoying though as I rebuilt the bergs with new kits not that long ago.

            Hi John,

Guess what? I'm in the same boat as you - a flooding carb. So I bought in a couple of these 'ball bearing' type of valves from Moss also.. I've yet to fit them but have high hopes that they do as they say and don't flood.

            Best of luck,

            Duncan.
