    Replacing vacuum advance

    Evenin All

Picked up a new vacuum advance unit from Paddocks on the way home tonight and thought I'd have a go at fitting it.

Think I'm doing it right but one question if anyone on here is familiar with the task

I've removed the base plate (I've got no points) and expected the actuating arm of the old vacuum unit to be somehow pinned or screwed onto the bottom of the base plate. It's not.

Under the optic bit of the electronic ignition is a moveable triangular plate (see pic) with a tapered pin protruding downwards. This seems to be designed to just pass down through the hole in the actuating arm of the vacuum unit.

I'm guessing this is not original equipment and is part of the electronic ign system.

    Does this seem right?

    Hi Dave

Mine was like that before I swapped to LD's ignition system. Is it piranha/newtronic?Yes the little pin has to engage in the hole in the arm from the vacuum advance module - it can be quite tricky engaging it, atleast mine was.
You can check by sucking on the vacuum pipe to see if the plate moves.

Also make sure the triangular plate can slide real easy, a bit of grease will help.

    Good luck

    Cheers....Al

That is a base plate that is supplied with the electronic ignition, the original is a 2 plate system, one fixed and one that can rotate.Might be worth giving the advance weights at the bottom of the dissy a clean up and lub whilst you have it open.
That triangle set up on mine was rubbish and didn't move smoothly at all,and was one of the reasons i went over to the pertronix system but I had to buy a new standard baseplate to go with it.

      Cheers Steve

        Thanks Al thanks Steve

What a fiddle trying to get it located again. I've given up for the night.
Yes it's a Newtronic system and yes I think that plate needs greasing up.

I imagine carbs must give quite a bit of "suck". Even sucking onto the new vacuum unit without it connected to anything, I can't get it to move much.

        Thanks again

        Dave
