manic fuel pump

Stiil trying to get engine running, symptoms per page 58 Haynes manual -
difficult starting, uneven running, lack of power and cutting out.
No apparent blockages, checked needle valves and float levels, all o.k. and full float chambers.
Lots of fuel in inlet manifold.
Replaced inlet manifold gasket.
battery got low so tried towing, wouldn't start but fuel pump suddenly went from that annoying but strangely reassuring steady clicking to a constant high speed clicking like a cricket on speed.
Don't think it was out of fuel but put another gallon in anyway but no change.

Any ideas?

Hiya, it sounds as if the pump diaphragm has given up. As they tend to fail progressively that would explain your other symptoms. It's also possible that the needle valves have failed open and the old girl's flooding. Cheers, Martin.

Check the carb diaphragms. A split one would cause similar symptoms.
