OK Guys, I have a problem with Castrol oil for my B/W35 in the w/shop manual it recommends TQF type F `I can't get that over here, I can only get ATF D111 which states do not use where type F is recommended or the other option is Automatic TQ Dexron 111 I know there has been a lot of discussion about not using dexron in a 35 but I have also been advised that if the box has had the bands and clutches replaced (which mine has) then using dexron is not a problem in fact it has been recommended. Because of the new lining meterial (non asbestos) It seems that dexron has an adverse effect on asbestos that why it should not be used on an orignal. Any input on this would be greatly apprieciated. Cheers Graham

Reading about auto box fluid has got me worried. I went in to my local motor shop to get some top up fluid, showed the man the list from the driver's book and came out with something called Matic ATF 3 by a French company called CAI, who I have never heard of. On the container it says" Synthetic lubricant for auto transmissions, power steering, convertors and hydraulic systems". I have not used it yet and not sure if I ought to. It also states on the container:
GM Dexron111
Ford Mercon
Allison C4
MB 236.5/236.9
Voith 6 607
I assume they mean it is equivalent or suitable for, but I really have no idea.
Anyone know,
I think I'll pop down to a bigger store and see if they have the Total or Elf product which is quoted in the book.
Any advice would be welcome.

I guess you can't get Castrol TQF I can't so I've ended up with TQD which is Dexron11 acording to Castrol classic Tec Dept that's as good as it gets. In France if you can get Total you need ATF33 or Elf you need Elfmatic F this is acording to the Stag workshop manual hope this helps GrahamOriginally posted by Don Maxwell View PostReading about auto box fluid has got me worried. I had my BW 65 fully stripped and rebuilt by Mackies Automatics in Glasgow, about 18 months ago. Great job and well chuffed with it. However when I went to pay the bill I asked what fluid he had used. Dextron II He replied, I almost hit the roof and asked him why on earth he had used Dextron II. His answer was that all the soft components that they now use and did use in the rebuild of mine were designed to run with Dex II.
I was a little sceptical and told him so.
His solution to this was that he guaranteed the car for 12000 miles regardless of how long it took me to reach 12000 Miles.
This I got in writing and the company in question has been around for 32 years.
I have had no problems although I have considered flushing the Dex II out, but to be honest it works just fine, with absolutely no problems what so ever, so I have left it in.

According to all the information he's dead right. As I have said I cannot buy TQF over here so I've spoken to jpat ( auto specialist and parts supplier) and to Kryten Russ and they both agree If you use NOS bands, clutches use TQF If you using new friction meterials use Dexron 11. Also I would guess there are not many orignal boxes or nos parts around any more. I took a trip into town yesterday armed with the relevant page from the handbook. I found all sorts of auto fluid, most of which had a Dexron reference. Some said they were universal. I did not find any with a reference the same as in the book. Maybe most of these type numbers have been superseded. So I came back and went on the net. I eventually ordered Castrol TQF from Belgium at a Jaguar spares site. Later I found that the same stuff is used on some motorbike chain lube systems and some UK bike sites were selling it. I then looked much further down the Google list and blow me was there not a mini spares site in France selling the stuff cheapest of all!
All the correspondence on this makes me wonder what exactly I have in my box. Like a lot of people here, I just though you stuffed any auto fluid in and maybe the PO did too. So I think I will just change it for TQF when it comes. I will then sleep soundly again at night!
