Exhaust pipe repairs - what is permitted at MOT?

Hi all. The GT6 is due its MOT next month and I am concerned about the rear exhaust silencer as it has several small perferations in it. Funds do not permit its replacement at the moment. Are exhaust bandages an MOT failure? Any suggestions on how to fill small holes in a stainless exhaust? Thanks in advance. Bruce

I have put several moderns through the mot in recent years with various methods of bunging up holes in back boxes, and I have never had any problems provided they were not blowing at the time. I havent tried bandages for some years, usually just fill the holes with paste

Bruce, if your using the chap in Brymbo nip up and ask him. I've had a few things go through with bandages and I think the main criteria is that they are safe, look like they will last and don't leak.

Makes me chuckle that one, car fail due to leaking exhausts - thought the point of an exhaust was to allow the gas to leak, that's why it's got a huge hole at the back!

Hi Guys. Thanks for your thoughts. Will try a combination of bandage and exhaust paste then take it along to our regular local friendly MOT tester for his views on it before I actually book it in for the test. Regards Bruce

Hi Bruce this may sound a bit silly but if the box is stainless so it's not rusty why can't you have it welded for a permant fix? Graham

It only has to be gas-tight and not sooo rusted that it injures the tester while he's inspecting it - bandage should be fine
