    Auto gearbox

    Hi

I purchased my 1972 Stag about 8 weeks ago and with the new metalic fushia respray nearing completion I hope to pick the car up next week. I know that the gearbox may be faulty, it works, but the cars been standing for 12 years.

I spoke to Rimmers and they suggested changing the BW35 box for the more robust BW65. I did a bit of research and found that the BW35 output shaft is splined and the 65 flanged

Are they interchangable and is this a task for the average DIY man. Is there any other alternative that would increase the mpg figure.

    Any info would gratefully accepted.

You could swap the 35 for a 65 if you have the correct prop and torque convertor, not sure about the crossmember and exhaust mounts. I don't think you'll get a noticeable improvement on mpg unless you go for a four speed auto conversion, which is another kettle of fish altogether and not cheap. Many have gone for this swap already and I intend to v.soon too. Search this forum for lots more info.

      Hi Tony

If you want to improve MPG the only option is the Tate-Lewis 4 speed ZF box if you are running a standard Triumph engined Stag. I have just fitted this box to my own Stag but can't comment on it yet as I still have a couple of bits to do before it goes back on the road in May. Not a cheap option at £1750 plus fitting but a conversion that a lot of people seem to want. I don't think there is a lot to choose between a BW35 & BW65 they are both 70's boxes and things have much improved since, probably Rimmers after the extra sale. You will be able to pick up plenty of S/H boxes and I would take a chance on one of these, I have one myself going spare now.

Russ is looking forward to seeing your car to take the weight off him, I hope you have broad shoulders and can take the friendly banter. Good luck with the car.

Thank god for that! A madder colour than mine!

I'll have my BW65 box going spare soon Tony - 1st gear is a little noisy but it works lovely -it was supposed to have been rebuilt 2 years ago - I'm taking the plunge with the 4 speed conversion and it's £2k price tag fitted. The main reason for going 4 speed isI do a lot of distance driving - not that the oldbox is no good.

If you are thinking of buying my oldbox from me, feel freeto try it out before it gets taken out of the car....

Thanks for the help re the gear box. another two grand on top of the re-spray and I'll be single again.

I've just had a call from the body shop, all is not well. Apparantly they can't get the paint to spray evenly. The original instructions from the manufacturer were wrong so it looks like it's back to the drawing board.

Maybe a nice candle apple red?

As soon as I know the state of the gearbox I'll get back to you.

          Many thanks

Tony (9 weeks, three days, 17 hours and three minutes since purchasing my car and I still haven't got it)

            Hi Tony,

I concur with Bob; if you need to spend out money on a replacement auto box, spend a bit more and enjoy the benefits of the 4-speed ZF. I had mine fitted about 8 years ago, and don't regret it at all. The gear changes are super-smooth (which you'll never get with either of theBW boxes), and with the extra 4th gear, fuel economy will be greatly improved. On our SOC tour to the Ardennes last weekend, I averaged 28mpg over the 900 miles that we did, which could easily have been improved a bit moreif I hadn't enjoyed the Stag's performance quite so often!

For info, Tate & Lewis are currently developing an electronic version of the 4-speed ZF, which is programmable, and can even have flappy-paddles fitted to the steering column for 'manual' gear changes,if that's your bag.
