It is possible back prior to 1981 that the chassis plate and or original vehicle documents were lost and then replaced.
At the time of reregistration the best date of manufacture / remanufacture would have been the date of any inspection hence W plate.
These days it would be treated as a kit car or a "new" car and have to go through the SVA (Single vehicle approval) scheme It would then be given a new style VIN number and a current registration plate. In some cases this number will then become nontransferrable and be forced to remain with the car as an anomaly so that future sellers cant sell it off as "superb condition original vehicle".
This process ensures that any buyer will ask questions and the odd history will stand out like a sore thumb.
Normally it just means that extensive work has been done to the car both in metal work and paper work. I don't know to what extent the original documents are traced or how much work the owner has to put in to prove the paperwork has really been lost to prevent the original chassis number being transferred to another vehicle. It does mean that this car for sale now is "probably" ok.
You would want those awkward questions answered prior to letting go of your cash though! Where did it come from, what is the recent history... its all thirty years ago now! How much work had been done and how well has it been done. The SVA is supposed to do all this for you but in fact its not much different than a MOT test with more red tape and more expense attached.
