Reason: additional info
I had the same problem and it was due to cracked tracking on the back of the warning light panel. The 12v is fed to the back of the panel and distributed to each of the warning lamps, from the warning lamp it will then go to your choke switch and once the swith is operated, to ground to complete the circuit and light your lamp.
If you know your way around a multimeter then take the lead off the choke switch, one probe (+) to the lead the other (-) to ground, with the ignition on you should get 12v. If you do, then suspect an earth fault, if you don't, the problem is either loom or more likely the back of the warning light panel. Actually, it could just be the bulb as this will be part of the circuit.
Getting to the lamp cluster means undoing the four dashboard screws, pulling off the rheostat knob and genly pulling the dash forward, the air supply tube also come off. Pull off the multi-connector on the back of the lamp panel, then twist the metal casing gently until the lugs line up and it comes off. There is a large spring in there as well to keep it all in place. It just pulls out and then you can remove the screws to get the pcb off and reveal the lamps.
Hope this helps
